Strahan is nice, has river cruises to the Franklin/Gordon. A deserted beach is also close by. (Actually was my favourite time in tassie)

If I was going (haven't been for ages) I would try the Wineglass Bay look-out walk and sections of the Cradle Mountain or I think they call it the overland trail. I heard they have a ferry trip on Lake St Clair.
I would have some wandering around time in Hobarts old town and eat plenty of Lobsters everywhere I went.
Plus I would try and find some fairy penguin sites.

Tour the Cadbury chocolate factory in Hobart (reservations needed, at least a week in advance).
Stroll Hobart's Salamanca street market on the weekend. Along the way, visit The Antarctic Experience museum.
Spend a day at the Port Arthur Historic site, including a short boat tour and a guided tour of the ground.
In Strahan, take a cruise up the Gordon River and Macquarie Harbor.
Visit Cradle Mountain National Park. You can take several short walks near the Visitors Centre, including a interpretive loop trail, or a short ways up the Overland Track.
Visit Lake St. Clair, at the other end of the Overland Track. Take a walk around the lake.
In Taranna, visit the Tasmanian Devil Park to see a bunch of the little devils.
Go to Eagle Neck to see spectacular wave-shaped coastal features like Tasman Arch, Tesselated Pavement, and Devil's Kitchen.

Re Antarctic Exhibit, near Hobart
Friends from Tasie told me last week, that this is now closed.
Round Launceston...
1.The walk around Cataract Gorge in Launceston is worthwhile. You can park at both ends, from one, have a swim in a free pool, stroll across wide lawns to the suspension bridge or take a chair lift to an English-style restaurant, from the other (near the Penny Royal Inn) , the right hand side walk is easy and rewarding,with lovely views down the Tamar River and the gorge as you go, up to a suspension bridge overlooking the same restaurant. The left hand trail is more demanding, through the bush. Theb gorge is now a cataract only after heavy rain - it was one of the very first places to be dammed (or damned!) for hydroelectricity.
2. Drive to the Swiss-style village of Grindelwald, on the west side of the Tamar a few km away. Try wine tasting at the new vineyards. Views across the Tamar to Mt Barrow, snow covered in winter.
3. The Japanese monkeys in the park in Launceston are worth several visits (free) especially towards feeding times, late afternoon. I lived there for 6 years, at GeorgeTown (Australia's oldest town, as opposed to city), and these were my favorite things in the area.
Mount Field National Park and Russell Falls, day trip from Hobart, is also a must for me. Alf's suggestions in the south are good too. Have fun

Hi Mahola,
My husband I will be in Hobart at around that time - January 1-4 actually. We do not want to drive. I've read that Freycinet National Park is amazing...one book said "if you do nothing else in Tasmania, go here." You might want to check it out.

Hi Mahalo, We just returned from Australia. We spent 2 weeks in Taz. and loved it. Hobart is a great city. Lots of pubs, restaurants etc. be Sure and go to the Salamanaca Mkt on Saturdays . It is huge and lots of fun and good bargains. Also Cradle Mt. is a msut as iss Freycinet Park. Huon Valley, close to Hobart is beautiful. Port Arthur is very interesting. We liked Strahan, but its expensive. Suggest staying in Queenstown and driving to Strahan. (Spectacular drive). Lots of good hiking trails. Weather was perfect. Taz. is a wonderful place.
