Sydney hotel
Hi,
I'm going to Sydney for a medical conference. I'm bringing my sister along and we are looking for a hotel or B&B in Sydney with easy accessibility to the Convention Center. We will be there July 22 to July 25 (3 nights) Since I'm going to be at the conference and she'll be out sightseeing, we were looking for a basic place around 150 USD. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks, Tim.

$150 USD is now about $179 AUD, you could try the Russell in the Rocks Area. There was a recent post about that you could check out.
Further away from the convention centre, but good for shopping (Paddington, Bondi Junction). Sullivan's in Oxford St Paddington is very reasonably priced. A number of work colleagues have stayed there and said it was good for the price.

If you look in the Rocks area (not sure where the convention center is), consider the Lord Nelson. I think we paid about 150 USD, certainly no more than that - it might have been less. It was a wonderfully charming place to stay. Great breakfast and wonderful people. The only downside was no lift (dh has bad knees) but we managed. They even let us into our room at 7am when we arrived from the States since no one had been in it the night before. Plus they gave us a small breakfast which we wouldn't normally have gotten. I'd stay there again in a minute.

I am in Adelaide now as I respond after just leaving Sydney-the Convention Center is in Darling Harbor - anywhere between the Rocks and Darling will be fine-There is lots to do by the convention center,Harborside -shopping, QVB-shopping, Aquarium, maritime museum, Wildlife museum ( which we thought better than Taronga Zoo) Take the ferry to the Rocks,or take a harbor cruise, tour the Opera House. The weekends there is a market in the Rocks area that is very good-arts and crafts of the local people, don't waste your time at the market in Paddy's Market-pretty "junky" unless you want to buy produce. Sorry I can't tell you any places to stay but anything around the Rocks, Darling Harbor,Pitt/George Street should be fine-you can walk where ever you want to go from there in about 15-20 mins.
Have a great time.

Hi Tim,
You could also look at The Grace (Cnr York & King Streets in the CBD). Another poster in the last week or so is also going to a conference at the Convention Centre & is probably going to stay at The Grace.

Grace Hotel is listed on Fodors as starting at $300 AUD, so may be out of your price range. But the transport issues on that thread may help you to get a sense of what areas to stay in if you don't mind catching public transport or walking to Darling Harbour.
If you haven't already, try some of the discount hotel websites, I often use GoStay, and others on this forum have recommended Wotif.

Wotif has The Grace this week with specials AUD165, 185 & 220. Usually worth contacting the hotel direct, quoting these rates & asking whether they'll do better for extra days.

Hi there,
Was out there last Sept and stayed at the Radisson, which is about a 5 min walk. The Ibis and Novotel are two more properties that are located even closer to the Convention Center.
The area in general has a great atmosphere.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up getting The Grace for 170AUD on wotif.com for Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21st. I had emailed the reservation dept to see if they wanted to match and add Tues July 17 (wotif wouldn't accept the non-consecutive night) but I never got a response from The Grace.
