HELP>> Best Dive reef?
Having a hard time and leaving in a few weeks. Don't know if getting a 1 night liveaboard dive boat out of Cairns (they all go to Norman, Hastings, Saxton, Moore etc. right out from Cairns) or day dives out of Port Douglas,(to the Agincout reef, Undine reefs)? I want clearer water, the most colors in the coral and fish. What about Aristocat boat out of PD or the Kangaroo Explorer overnight? What would you do?

puckett, I do not dive but have read many times that the best diving is quite a ways so you need to do an liveaboard for the very best.
Having said that my little trips out snorkelling closer in have been great but if you have had a lot of experience in coral reefs you may have "been there. done that" so you must go for a liveaboard.
Just snorkelling I saw more fish than ever in my whole entire life x 3, gorgeous beautiful colurful fishes. I was in heaven. The coral was not as colourful as I expected but I have no way to know what is normal, such a huge reef you never know the whole picture on just a few visits.
I think the recommended day trip here is on Ocean Spirit.
So my rather un-nformed advice is if you have experience diving coral reefs go for a liveaboard, if not you will still be blown away on a day trip.

puckett - for a one night liveaboard you are obviously restricted in terms of distance - as you are considering a day trip Tusa Dive out of Cairns is a very professional outfit, takes small numbers, and has speedy boats. You could take two trips, Tusa will not visit the same reefs on consecutive days. Of course, you'd miss out on a night dive by eliminating the liveaboard.

You should post this question on Scubaboard.com and give some information about your skill level.
I'm leaving soon for an Oz trip with four days at Heron Island (apparently good for novices like me, possibly a little dull for advanced divers).
