trident hilton agra vs. mughal sheraton?
trying to decide btwn the two...would love to have a nice pool to cool off (it'll be early may when we're there) and trying to figure out how important proximity to the taj is. (i know pollution is an issue so not really concerned about views from rooms...)

thanks for the feedback so far...am SO tempted to do the amarvilas but it's roughly 3X+ the cost of the the other two (each clock in at about $90 or so). so while the oberoi seemed like a great splurge but i think if we do so, it's more appealing for delhi or mumbai versus in agra.
any votes for the trident hilton? seems like the sheraton might be the winner...

onbe operator suggested the hilton to us, but we were told it was a notch below the sheraton and not as well located...honestly i did not even see it while in agra...
we did stay at the sheraton and were pleased with our stay there....there is a large pool....there is also a tower at one corner of the hotel from which you have a good view of the taj...
i would not pay the extra for the amer...go there for dinner however one nite....it was like a private home in the lobby....not a person in sight...

Between the Sheraton and the Trident, I would definitely recco the Sheraton. Nicer hotel and a better location. The Trident had a redo last year, and I hate to say you can’t really tell except in the lobby, the rooms are still very tired looking IMO. Of course if you really can do it, the Oberoi would be the first choice. The pollution is not so excessive that you can’t see the Taj from it, and the views are quite magical really. With the really hot hot weather you are going to find in May in Agra, you might appreicate the cool oasis that the Oberoi will be.
However, I have to say that other than the Oberoi, my favorite hotel in Agra would be the Taj View. For value, location, rooms, and a good view of the Taj, the hotel is quite nice. The doubles are a good size with marble floors and nice new bathrooms with pedestal sinks. I only looked at suites, but the ones I saw were two good-size rooms with a canopy bed, flat screen TVs and a huge bath with separate shower. The Taj view rooms have excellent Taj views across the city, and only this hotel and the Oberoi have Taj views, albeit the Oberoi's are truly superb ones. The prices were about a third less than the Sheraton (rack rates), the suites cost about the same as a deluxe room at the Sheraton, which are basically standard US motel rooms. You can walk out from the hotel to bits of Agra which is a nice change from the other hotels like the Jaypee Palace or the Sheraton. They do not have the great big lawns and gardens of the Oberoi or the Sheraton, but then you aren't paying Oberoi prices. They have a nice small lawn area at the back with a pretty pool. You might want to consider it, take a look at tajhotels.com.

Agree with Cicerone. Other than the Amarvilas, I loved the Taj View hotel in Agra. Stayed there last month in one of their Taj facing suites (read Cicerone's description). Haven't stayed at the Trident Hilton in Agra, but did stay in the one at Jaipur. Definitely preferred the Taj View in Agra compared to the Trident Hilton in Jaipur...

Stayed in the Mughal Sheraton Agra in 2002.
Stayed in the Trident Jaipur also.
So I may be comparing apples & oranges here but, will do anyway.
Mughal Sheraton had pretty nice rooms.
You can see a glimpse here:
travelistic. com/video/show/1643 about a minute into the video.
The grounds were WONDERFUL. The observation deck for the Taj made it all worth it.

I love the juxtaposition of the houses in the foreground. I sat on the deck and watched life in Agra while the sun set behind the Taj. that moment cannot be beaten.
The Trident Jaipur was more ornate and pristine. But I don't know anything about the Trident Agra.

I don't think it is worth paying a lot extra for a room to view the Taj. If it is only a few bucks then sure, but if it is a lot, then just get up early or stay up late and watch from an observation deck

We stayed at the Hilton in December 2005.Very disappointing. We booked it on the strength of the Fodors recommendation in the guide book .As I recall it described the rooms as large etc.Well they were dead ordinairy , quite small and the dining room lit like a dining hall in a boarding school .Whilst the foyer was an exercise in restrained good taste it is not a place I can recommend ,although it has a lovely pool . So I would opt for the Sheraton .Amarvillas is renowned but much more expensive. We also went to eat at Clarks Shiraz Hotel . Fabulous Mughal food in the dining room . Looks a bit ordinary and dated but it was lively with shops and people moving about all the time which the Hilton did not have .So look at that as well re price etc

I think a Taj view is worth it, you will be in your room at times to observe it more than you are aware of, esp if you don't want to get up every morning and go over at sunrise (which you should do at least once), you can watch the sunrise from your room). Also for sunset, and if yo are there on a full moon and a clear night you may get some good night views too. Go to sunrisesunset.com for info on timing of sunrise and sunset, this site gives moon phases too.
