trekking in july in Myanmar
We will be in Myanmar in july during the monsoon season. Has anyone tried the trek from Kalow to Inle Lake at that time of year? Will Hsipaw be impossible? Kengtung? We haven't made itinerary yet but hope one of these areas tends to get less rain. We will be coming from Laos-would it be advisable to do all our trekking there? Thanks!

The weather in Laos and Myanmar will be pretty similar, so you won't gain a weather advantage with one over the other.
Are you using a local agent in Myanmar? If you are, they could tell you which of the trekking area would be the least impacted by the weather.

We were in Kengtung last March, and we went on three different day hikes from there. Although I don't know about the July weather, I must say that the area was so very fascinating, from a cultural standpoint. The indigenous people around Kengtung are very friendly, and they dress in ethnic clothing. We had a guide who spoke various dialects, so he was able to translate for us. Our guide said that the area will soon be open for overnight hiking, but you will need a permit.
I did a one day hike in Laos from Luang Prabang to a waterfall, and I do not think it was as interesting. The village where we stopped to rest was very westernized, and a woman hit her barking dog with a shoe. For me, it ruined the whole experience.

Some areas of Kyaing Tong (Kengtung) are covered with barren soil that can be very slippery during the monsoon season. Trekking is still feasible but there are better choices for this time of year. I'd recommend Kalaw to Inle Lake (Khaung Daing) instead. Not as slippery but still rainy so bring your rain coat!
