Transit Hotel Options at Chengdu

I have an overnight layover in October, on the way from the US to Kathmandu. Any recommendations on hotel options? On the airport website they mention a hotel but it's not clear whether it's in the airport or nearby. Anyone have any info on it or is it better to go into town? Is a visa needed for transit passengers leaving the airport for a hotel in town? Thanks for any info.

Where are you flying into CTU from?

Americans do not need a visa if you're transiting between two international flights and you're staying at the airport for up to 24 hours; or

If you're transitting in Shanghai between two international flights and you're staying in Shanghai for up to 48 hours (no need to be inside airport).

There is an airport-run 2* hotel just across from the main entrance to the old (now intra-Sichuan) terminal. Don't know if you're allowed or supposed to get there without a visa, as it is inside airport perimeter but definitely landside and not by the gates.

I'm flying to Chengdu from Narita (Tokyo), arriving at 10:20 pm, and then flying on to Kathmandu at 7:40 am the following morning. It would be an awfully long time to just hang out in the airport lounge.

Are your tickets already booked? If not, have you considered other transiting alternatives like Hong Kong (HKG)?

Anyways, if you're going to get a Chinese visa anyways, you probably want to go into the city, as that airport hotel gets very poor rating. You can get one of the newer chain 3* hotels in Chengdu for under RMB200, and taxi is about half an hour and 50RMB each way.

I'm already booked - the routing isn't ideal for getting from the US to Nepal but I'm using frequent flyer miles, thus the stop in Chengdu. I won't be stopping over in China otherwise so won't have a visa. I had heard the airport hotel is pretty poor so I was hoping there might be other alternatives.
