The Darjeeling Limited - is there such a train?
Hi
I went to see Wes Anderson's movie The Darjeeling Limited yesterday. It was as weird and wonderful as the other films that he has made. But is there a Darjeeling Limited train in real life? I would love to go to India one day but my wife is a bit skeptical when it comes to doing it independently. But from the movie it looked like an adventure

I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know which train they're talking about, but I don't think so. What there is, is the Darjeelng Himalayan Railway (/www.dhrs.org) - absolutely marvelous - you can ride up a mountain, on the main street of Indian villages, behind a steam engine. For my trip on the DHR, and for my ten weeks in India traveling almost exclusively by train, see wilhelmswords.com/asia2001/index.html

As far as I know there is a narrow-guage "toy train" that travels to Darjeeling, but it isn't pictured in that movie.
There is also a very elegant Raj-era train trip you can take through India in a train that looks more like the one in Darjeeling Express.
I think it's called Palace on Wheels. It's apparently the equivalent of travelling through India in a five-star hotel, or an old luxury liner. For example, the Smithsonian's expensive tour of India uses it.
