Short stop in Hong Kong - what to do first night?

We're going to be in Hong Kong for 2 nights at the end of April, stopping on way back to Toronto from Austraia. We've actually booked a 2 night package through a travel agent, something I rarely do, but it seemed like a fairly good deal. We arrive in HK around 5:30 PM. We're staying at the Stanford Hillview in Kowloon and have a 1/2 day city tour the next morning. Any suggestions for the evening we arrive? I've already warned my husband that we'll likely be busy - we only have 2 nights and I know that really isn't going to be enough time. Ideas for dinner? Night markets? Whatever? I haven't done a lot of "research" for this part of the trip - most of my reading has been done to plan our time in Australia. Thanks for any suggestions.

There are plenty of restaurants near your hotel on Kimberley Road and surrounding streets. I don't think you'll have a problem finding plaes to eat. If you have specific cuisine in mind, let us know, but I'm not familiar with specific restaurants in that area.

As for things to do on first night, I have two suggestions. One is to walk down through Tsim Sha Tsui to the Star Ferry and take the ferry to Hong Kong Island and back. Or even go up to the Peak for a night vista - there are restaurants up there too. Or maybe go to one of the coffee shops or lounges in the hotels with a harborview afterwards. [Peak tram runs till midnight, Star Ferry till 11:30pm.]

Or you can go visit one of the two main night markets in Kowloon, or both. One is on Temple Street in Yau Ma Tei (just a little north of Tsim Sha Tsui), the other is the "Ladies' Market" on Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mong Kok, a little further North. On Temple St, you should find people playing old-style Cantonese music, while Ladies' Market is all shopping. You won't find good Western food in these areas.

The ferry is incredibly romantic! For one of your daytime's consider taking the 6 bus from outside the ferry landing (Hong Kong side) out to Stanley Beach, we had an incredible day there. The ride is lovely and there is a nice little covered market in the town there. It has a beach side resort feel to it and we had our best restaurant experience for lunch. It was a local Chinese restaurant, full of workers having lunch so we knew the food would be great, all chattering, old men on cellphones and young men taking a nap in their chairs - not romantic but I will never forget the experience. Over to to right side of the resort there was a lovely breezy Tapas kind of restaurant, we stayed for drinks and Tapas at about 5.00pm and they had a little band there playing classical spanish music! It was surreal! You can make your two days so great. Have fun.

Evenings at 8 they have a light show viewable from the Kowloon harborside. We saw this a couple of times while dining at one of the waterfront restaurants, but the best view we found was from an elevated walkway behind the cultural center immediately beside the Star Ferry terminal , Kowloon. It was best from the walkway because you could hear the music associated with it. We also watched it from one of the restaurants (Cafe Deco, good food with excellent view) atop Victoria Peak, but if your flight is scheduled to arrive at 1730 you probably won't be settled into your hotel before 1930, and it would be hard to get to the peak on time for the show, but there is always the next night.
