Shimla, Nthn India
Returning for our fifth trip to India in a couple of weeks after a flying visit home to Australia from Koh Samui, our home for the past few months. We're travelling up to Shimla on the Himalayan Queen from New Delhi station and would love some hotel recommendations in Shimla & Dalhousie. Anyone?

Not sure about Dalhousie but have been to Simla - can remember 2 good ones - Wildflower Hall was really good . Another one I think is The Dawn (reasonable)
Enjoy your trip though Shimla as such is not a great plae any more ( filled with disorganised construction / concrete )
cheers

I second Wildflower Hall. Very reminiscent of the days of the Raj. Shimla, as timsmith said is a sad reminder of its regal past. Try staying at Chail, not too far, my parents went on a 3-day trip in the region last fall and gave Shimla a complete miss. They stayed at some royal palace converted to a guest house, and were impressed.

Thank you both both your replies. Sounds like Shimla's fate is similar to Darjeeling's! It is good "springboard" destination from Delhi to Dalhousie, Chamba & Khajjiar so we thought we'd give it a couple of days, maybe a day in view of your comments. Wildflower Hall sounds great so we'll check it out. Have either of you, or anyone else travelled to Sarahan? Thanks again!

G'day, Bob! We're craving the Kingfisher! Expensive compared to Thailand's beer but wot the heck! Samui is out of Chang right now! We drank 'em dry before our trip to Oz Feb 15. Takes a month for them to recover from our stays there! We're back there in May so supply should be back to normal! Busily exhausting supplies of Aussie red right now! See ya! Why don't you retire??

Oh skipped the part about Dalhousie, I stayed at the Himachal Tourism hotel(dont remember the name) and while Dalhousie was beautiful, Khajjiar and Kala top were our best experiences on that trip. Definitely consult the Himachal Tourism website, its quite informative.
Its funny somebody mentioned Darjeeling, I was born there and I still do have an ancestral home(left to ruins) and I 'm sad at what Darjeeling is today! Ahh, digressions.
Btw, I and the wife plan to visit Samui in late may, so hijacking the thread a bit, any recommendations about hotels? I like the Buri Rasa/Anantara kinds, $200+ and with a charming southern Thai feel. We are New York City dwellers, and we crave an ethnic experience.

Check out the Whitehouse, the Imperial Boathouse & best of all, imho, Sala Samui on www.sawadee.com. There is a beautiful resort close to our little villa called Tongsai Bay, the place looks lovely but we have not checked out their rooms. BTW Sala has two very good restaurants and is on the best beach on Samui, according to locals & me!

You may add to your list Chapslee & Woodwille in Simla, Chalet Naldehra at Naldehra, 16km above.Chapslee has a dining room which is stunning. I stayed there with my family a few years back. The fixed meals are again very good. They are open from April to October. East Bourne is good & close to the BCS, but currently under renovation. The HPTDC Holiday Home had a good bar from where you can see the entire Simla lights in the evening. Visit the Gaeity Theatres & see if some plays are on.
In Dalhousei there are small hotels with low efficiency levels. Moti Mahal & Kwality restaurants, I am told, serve well.
Happy Travels!

I think the best place in chail is the chail palace owned by the himachal tourism. The service is great compared to other govt hotels.
I would also suggest going manali and see. There is a great resort which has just got renovated known as manuallya. you can actually check it out on manuallaya.com.
