Penang - ParkRoyal AND E&O?
Hi,
Firstly, thanks for all responses so far! It's been a great help. From all accounts it seems that staying at the E&O is highly recommended, however the cheapest rate (via the net) is $250 per night, which is a bit of a stretch. I've also found good reviews of the Parkroyal, at $150 per night.
My question is ... would it be worth splitting our time and staying 2 nights at E&O and 3 or 4 at ParkRoyal? I'd personally favour the E&O, but feel the ParkRoyal might be better for family.
What are the areas around these two hotels really like? If we walk around the areas will we be able to experience 'real' Penang or will we only see tourist geared shops, restaurants etc?
Some forums have suggested 5 or 6 nights in Penang is too long, but keeping in mind we have a 4 year old daughter and a baby, we tend to stay longer at each destination and keep the sightseeing pace slow. What would be your thoughts on this?

The E&O is right in Georgetown, so you see the old city, the shophouses and temples, the colonial architecture, the hawker centers.
We spent 6 or 7 nights at the E&O and it was just the right amount of time for us. Have you read my trip report? It will give you a flavor for what we did.
I don't know the Park Royal or where it is, but if you can only afford a few nights at the E&O, stay as long as you can afford. We got a great deal on the E&O website, but it's always worth looking at the hotel booking sites as well.

We're planning to be in Penang the first week of September. $160, that's good I'll keep trying!
Cathie, yes I have read your trip report - it's fantastic, I especially love the sound of all the amazing food - I'll be in heaven, not so sure about my bland food loving husband and daughter!

HotelBook.com (a site I have no experience with) has the E&O starting at $156 / night excluding taxes, but including b'fast and a welcome cocktail. AsiaTIV, which is new but so far proved reliable, has it starting at $201 a night, including taxes.

I am lcuy and MelissaHI's sometime travel agent. The rate they refer to was booked on the E&O's own website. We had 3 twin-bed suites and 1 triple, w/ an extra bed rolled in. The triple was the largest--25 steps from front door to sitting room window, past bathroom w/ tub, separate shower and WC closet and 2 sinks, walk-in closet that could accommodate all 3 of us at the same time, bedroom and sitting room. Fantastic 25-meter pool. Hawker stalls and historic neighborhoods just a couple blocks away. Definitely a place to return to.
