Macau Restaurants
Hi,
DH and I will be leaving later this week for a trip to Hong Kong and Macau. I looked up Macau on the forums here, but didn't see any recent restaurant recommendations. Can anyone make some? We like most kinds of food - not picky, but aren't interested in spending a fortune. Let's say, keeping the bill around or under $50 total for dinner, cheaper for lunch. The #1 restaurant on Trip Advisor is the IFT Educational Restaurant. Has anyone eaten there? It looked interesting. We're most interested in local foods (not French or Italian) and if anyone can recommend a place with good seafood, DH would be most appreciative!

For local Macanese food I like Fernando. It's next to a beach on the Cotai side and served food in a very relax atmosphere. Perhaps one of the most famous Macanese restaurant and featured on many television shows in the US. Also, very inexpensive IMO.

For local Chinese (Cantonese) food I like Tou Tou Koi. Very reasonable price and near the center of Macau.

Tou Tou Koi is the name of a Chinese restaurant, not a dish. 陶陶居. Has been around for long time, not fancy, but solid. There are also lots of Chinese restaurants near it, just off the busy Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro. Most are fine, but if you order seafood dishes, make sure you know the exact price, as many are sold by the tael (38g, or 1.33oz).
For Macanese Portugese food, Fernando is one of the most famous, but it's a bit out of the, behind the Hac Sa Beach. On the main peninsula, there are several on Rua Almirante Sergio, just north of the A-Ma Temple. One of the best rated is A Lorcha - I ate there recently and it's worth its reputation. Reservations needed if you don't want a long wait.
And there are even more on or around Rua do Cunha on Taipa. Popular restaurants include Dumbo and Pinocchio, though many find them pretty mediocre.
There are other snacks you can and should try in Macau, if you like food. One is the Pork Chop Bun. While you can find it everywhere, the "original" is from Tai Lei Loi Kei, a shack next to the old Taipa bus terminus. People line up there before 3p, when it starts serving it. However, recent reviews say it's not really worth the trouble. I haven't eaten there for years, so I cannot comment.
Another food is the Macanese egg tart. The place to get it is the original location of Lord Stow's Bakery in the old center of Coloane. [Fernando and Hac Sa Beach are on Coloane, and not far from Lord Stow's.] They also have a store in the Venetian, but many say the ones at the original place is the best.
For the other snacks like almond cookies and pork jerky, don't bother buying. Instead, just go try the free samples at one of the many Koi Kei Bakery stores. It seem ridiculous that they have three stores within 20 meters in the path leading to the St. Paul Ruins, but people do buy a lot of their stuff, for whatever reason. They also have a couple of stores on Rua do Cunha as well as well as other places throughout Macau. But again, I think it's good enough to eat the samples there.
