I stayed at the Siam Intercontinental and liked it. It was nice having the Skytrain right outside. Others prefer staying along the river. I think I would pick anywhere on the Skytrain, just because it's a really easy way to get around.

For a first time visitor, I recommend staying somewhere on the river and using the river taxis to get to and from the major tourist attractions. The Sky Train makes it easy to get around but really does not go to many of the tourist attractions. As far as the airport is concerned, the difficulty in traveling between it and your hotel will not so much depend on your hotel's location but the time of day when you travel. Rush hour can be awful in Bangkok.

We stayed at the Indra Regent in Bankok - we found it a good medium class hotel with very good service. (it also had a large street market outside)

It was so easy to get a air conditioned limo outside the hotel - ask the driver and he'll take you to all the tourist highlights! We did a canal trip by longtail boat - I really recommend it - its amazing to see houses built on stilts and people going about there life. Thailand is great!

Enjoy your trip

i am going back for my 5th time in 7 years...i love bangkok...we stay at the marriott resort and spa (not the jw marriott although that is nice too)..the spa is on the river away from the hub-bub and noise...it is about a 20 minute ride up the river (free every 1/2 hour-- shuttle)...it is a great take in to see the river and its traffic...as mentioned above the river boats are easy to use and you can get to the palace, wat arun and other places quite easily on the river....i would add that 2 days in Bkk is cutting it short---can you extend??? 5 would be much better...remember it is very hot and this makes getting around very difficult....look at the marriott site: www.marriott.com and select thailand and see for yourself---early bookings save money...an added attraction at this hotel is that there is a small mall at the back of the hotel and there is maconalds, american ice cream, a thai restaurant (2nd floor)---very good and cheap, and other amenities that you don't find at other places without going out to look for them...the breakfasts are like a marriott breakfast in the usa, with asian additions.....the pool is the best in bangkok and maybe in asia---or so we think...you would think that i only like american but i have travelled extensively and always like something easy (i.e. usa friendly) after a day on the town....an escape...have fun

bob
