Going to Japan in July and really confused and overwelmed : (
I am having a really hard time choosing a place to stop in between Tokyo and Kyoto. This is my original plan:
3 nights in Tokyo
1 night in Matsumoto
2 nights in Takayama
2 nights in Kanazawa
4 nights in Kyoto
But it seems like too many stops. I was thinking about narrowing it down to only 3 places...And taking a bunch of day trips. I am feeling really overwhelmed and stressed cause its a month away and i am still in limbo. Please help guys!
I wanted to visit Nara, Himeji, Osaka, and possibly the bamboo forest in Arashiyama. Does anyone know how long it would take to get to these places from Kyoto by train?
Thanks!

Take a deep breath and relaxxxxx
Yes these are a lot of stops....if you don't want to be on the move every other day cut some places out. Not that it is hard to travel to the places you have listed,by train I presume, its just a little much for the first time visitor.
If it were me, and I know its not, I would cut out Matsumoto and Takayama. I would put 2 nites in Kyoto and add one night in Nagoya to see the sumo tourney or you can get to Nagoya from Kyoto in 36 minutes via shinkansen and add all three nights in Kyoto or give Tokyo one more night.
Kanazawa is a direct train to Kyoto or Nagoya. See this site for train details, use the English button

you can do the Nara, Osaka or Himeji day trips from Kyoto
Aloha!

oh, forgot the time from Kyoto
Himeji is 55 minute Hikari shinkansen ride away from Kyoto
Osaka is 1/2 hour away from Kyoto via train
Nara is 45 minutes to an hour away depending what train you take
and Arashiyama is on the outskirts of Kyoto so is only 15 minutes by train

Thanks Hawaiiantraveler... You really put me at ease. You are the best!
Is Nagoya really only 36 minutes away from kyoto? It seems so much further when looking on the map!
I have a question about the bullet train pass. we purchased the 7 day unlimited pass over the internet and if we start using it on July 6th or 7th I'm afraid we will be a day or two short since we leave on the 16th. Will it be really pricy to get passes for a single day use?

Nope doing that right now . The only thing we have certain are our airplane tix- arriving July 4th and leaving July 16th. And we reserved 3 nights at the Prince Park Tower and last 2 nights at the Ana Hotel in Kyoto. We can add another night to Prince and Ana Hotel can be changed if necessary!

So you are arriving at NRT and leaving from KIX? Then you can arrange the days you use your 7 Day JR Pass for the travel time starting when you leave Tokyo....
I have only been twice to Japan (not counting the weekend when I broke my foot and had to come home). On my first trip I spent a week in Tokyo and the second a week in Kyoto. I would recommend you split your trip between those two and do day trips....
Nagoya is 36 minutes as said by ht on the Hikari train which you can take with the JR Pass.
Enjoy!
