Hi,

I don't expect that you will encounter too many after-affects of the recent floods. The worst-affected part of the country was around Nagoya. I was in Tokyo during the Nagoya floods, and train services in Tokyo (except those passing through Nagoya region) were not affected at all. During the floods the shinkansen service between Tokyo and Osaka was suspended for 21 hours, but this was the longest time period the shinkansen has ever been stopped for! Trains in Japan are excellent, and services seem to get back to normal very quickly.

I hope you have a great time using your JR pass. I highly recommend catching local trains as well as shinkansen to allow you to get to some of the smaller places. If you like Zen temples and gardens I highly recommend Koya-san and Takahasi.

JR (Japan Rail) pass allows you to take all JR line trains in Japan for a 7 to 21 days period, including the Shinkansen (bullet train). It can save you money if you intend to travel extensively. You'll find the relevant information on www.jnto.go.jp

Returned last Thursday from Japan...
FABULOUS !!!!
More info. on JR pass...
Cannot use it to travel on the latest Shinkansen ( "Nozomi" ). Can also use JR buses & one Ferry - can also get discounts at Station Hotels. Cannot use it for non-JR trains IE Keisei skyliner from Narita. Can only buy JR pass OUTSIDE of Japan, will receive a voucher which is exchanged for Pass when in Japan. If pass is lost no replacement is possible. Very useful to have if travelling extensively.
