if you are arriving from the usa, which i expect you are, plan to lay low the first day....you will be exhausted....take a nice swim on the 4th floor of the hotel...pool is a bit small...there is a whirlpool tub at the head of the pool if you can get it to work...very relaxing....
you might take a walk around sukumvit to get orientated, but if you lay low on that first day you will be rewarded in days to come....in the same area as the pool is a great spa...have a massage there if you want...a bit costly but its vacation....

the restaurants in the jw are quite good...especially the ones on the 2nd floor...the thai is exceptional...

if you feel like venturing out for dinner go down to soi 12 (the jw is on soi 2)---its a very long walk in that heat on your first day---i take a cab usually...thgere are 2 restaurants side by side on the right side of the soi about 2/3 of the way down the street....one is the famous cabbages and condoms and the other is crepes and co....most people love cabbages, we found it to be average...we did however love crepes and co....they served 3 meals per day and it is simply delicious...we have gone to cabbages for dinner and crepes for dessert also...
there is lots to do and see in your area..

we also love biscotti in the 4 seasons hotel (former regent hotel)...you can walk from the jw but i again prefer a cheap taxi....

i would eat normally on my first day...the bakery on the ground level of the jw is excellent if you don't want a full breakfast, which i prefer in that heat..

there is a small mall right across soi 2 from the hotel which has quite a lot of shops and restaurants (nothing special, except mcdonalds) and a great little grocery store in the basement...

What day are you arriving? I also arrive at midnight from JFK, and am trying to get weather info. Weather.com skips from Jan to March with no Feb avail. Are you on a tour?

Have a massage, take a boat ride for an hour or so and relax. Don't try to run around and see temples.

The JW Marriott has 24-hour room service and to the best of my knowledge, the coffeeshop on the ground floor is open 24 hours. If you step outide your hotel, you will also find some restaurants in the neighborhood still open.

The gym is large and very well equpped, IMO. They also have an excellent spa, but make bookings now as massages, etc get full. The gym should be open at all hours (accessible with your room key if not staffed), but check with the hotel on this. The pool is small, but perfectly adequate. OK (nothing like the Marriott Riverside which is large and shady).

I would bring an extra bag or buy a suitcase in Thailand (plentiful and cheap) rather than shipping gifts. Shipping is expensive, IMO and will make your bargin purchases no longer a bargain. The possible exception is furniture, which is still expensive to ship, but you obviously can't get it back in your checked luggage.

Thank you for the advice. We can handle heat and humidity as we are from Miami. Is Cabages and condoms within walking distance? How do you contact the hotel by E-mail to book massages?

You can fax the hotel and ask them to fax you a list of treatments and prices as well as a fax and/or e-mail for the spa. Fax for the hotel is 66-2-6567711. (Add 011 if calling from the US.) You can also e-mail the hotel by going to Marriott.com, finding the hotel in the directory, and clicking on "Qeustions or Comments?".

There is also a very good Mandara Spa at the Marriott Riverside if you want to head down there. The Mandara Spa website is at http://www.mandaraspa.com.

unless something has changed the coffe shop at the jw closes about 10 or so...we have had very good burgers and thai food in the bar...they are probably open late and yes there is 24 hour room service...

i would not ship anything...it is expensive and i know of cases when packages have been opened and things taken....
on the corner of soi 4 and sukumvit there is a luggage place...twice i have bought cheap bags there...less than $10 and they are adequate to take stuff home...last year we bought one of the huge stripped nylon bags with a zipper top..it stands about 3-4 feet tall and is 20 or so inches square...we loaded it up and checked it as an extra peice of luggage...many people plan to do this type of thing...

you will get to town about 1:15 from a 12 arrival...

have you arranged for a car to pick you up? i highly suggest it...you will be so tired and it is so hot and the taxis are mostly toyota corollas with small trunks ...you need comfort on that first arrival...it costs about $35...ask the hotel to send a car....call marriott 800-228-2100 and ask for the e-mail address...i think you may find it on the web too....

on soi 4 i am sure you will find places to eat late as well...lots of 60+ year old ex-pats reliving their youth with thai girls in that area, mostly americans, germans, austrailians and english....they are harmless....

you can walk to cabbages..it is quite a ways...maybe take 20 minutes or so...i hate to arrive at a restaurant all sweaty....it would probably cost $2. by taxi or less...cross over sukumvit and get taxi going the right way...or we find it better to have the door man at jw tell where you are going...check the soi number to make sure i have given you the correct one...soi 12 i think...

ALWAYS TAKE AN HOTEL BUSINESS CARD WITH YOU TO SHOW TAXI DRIVERS FOR YOUR RETURN...THEY OFTEN DON'T UNDERSTAND ENGLISH OR ANY DIRECTIONS...

another good place to eat is in the rembrandt hotel: indian on top floor--great view of city---great sunday buffet and brunch--reservations suggested.....also senor pico in same hotel and an italien place....its on soi 18, sukumvit rd

we also like gourmet gallery...its on a soi off of soi 39, sukumvit rd...western food and great desserts...try the onion soup with the hat.....

For the Bangkok experts on this thread, how would you compare the JW Marriott and the Conrad?

We called the Wat Pho Massage school the first morning and arranged for massages for both @5:00 p.m.. They came to our Hotel room and gave a 90 minute massage for 700 Baht. I got the phone number by googling the school and sending an E-mail. They responded with a phone number. The great thing about a massage in your hotel room is that you can fully relax during and after.

The key is close to your hotel. You don't want to negotiate BKK traffic too soon.

I would assume that the price for the Wat Pho massage of 700 baht is per person? We are staying at the Peninsula do they service all hotels in Bangkok?

Take the Shuttle to the Hotel..and sleep.Forget the Wat Po massage..unless you fancy old monks messing with your body.Take a long boat ride on the Shao Pra River instead.
