Filmwill's Indonesian Adventure

Well here we are, all settled in after a bit of check-in drama at the Thai Airways counter @ LAX. Seems that someone forgot to add David's ticket # to his reservation. I did consider for a moment leaving him behind ...but luckily we were able to sort it all out and now I sit here sipping some fruity vodka beverage in the Star Alliance lounge as we wait for our flight to be called for boarding (sorry, Smeags, no G&Ts here...can you believe the gall?!)

Thanks again, guys, for all your help planning this. We are SO excited!

A long 24hrs of traveling lies ahead of us and I'm sure we'll be a bit ragged once we arrive in Bali on Monday morning.

Look forward to updating this as much as I possibly can...but, you know, gotta leave *some* time for rest and relaxation.

Look forward to bringing you guys along on the journey...

It becomes clear. There was no chance that UNC would make the Final Four, so David could schedule the trip so he would miss it. Of course, he will miss opening day, Red Sox-Yankees. A sacrifice of the highest order.

Keep it coming FW. Of course, no penalty.

Have a great time! Looking forward to following along. I'm heading to Switzerland today, and Bangkok on the 19th, but the laptop goes along with me, as always.

HT, I hope you and Linda enjoyed your little holiday in Japan.

Go Cubbies!!! (wink wink)

Just take it slow when you get there. I remember Putu waking us up in the early evening for the plans the following day. Somehow we managed to convince him to show up.

Looking forward to the next installment...

Greetings fellow Fodorites! It's a testament that I'm actually able to write anything at this point when all I feel like doing is slapping my head down on this desk and drooling.

I digress...I am writing this from our lovely room at Hotel Tugu Bali on Canggu Beach. Overlook the beautiful ocean and slightly overcast skies from our balcony--barely conscious at this point.

Flight to BKK was relatively uneventful and actually went by quicker (even at 18 hrs flying time this time!) then in 2008. Stopped at the Royal Orchid Spa for a quick 30 minute neck and shoulder massage (that sure helped get the circulation going!) before running to our gate to catch our flight (eegad! the same plane AND the same seats!!) to Denpasar. Got a 2nd wind (somehow) for this flight...I suppose all for the anticipation of exploring somewhere new and so very far away from our world.

I'm so zonked right now though that I literally have no idea how I'm going to keep my eyes open for the complimentary check-in massage in 30 mins (yes, folks, it's tough here!) and making it to dinner at all, at this point, would be a triumph.

All very overwhelming right now, watching the motorbikes zoom by and all the crazy traffic getting away from the airport--thank God this hotel is so quiet. I think we may be two of 4 people here.

Haven't really seen much else at this point. All I can say is that it's HOT. Very, very hot. Africa hot. Cambodia was like the polar ice cap in comparison. Glad we brought those lightweight clothes.

Will check in again soon! Wish us luck in our consciousness...

I will add, for those waiting to hear about it, that Hotel Tugu is really quiet beautiful.

Ancient Javanese (and some Chinese) antiques adorn every single nook and cranny of this place. It's actually a rather large hotel (for a boutique) but the way the place is laid out--with narrow corridors and moss-covered statues everywhere--really makes you feel like you're the only one here. It has quite an impressive lobby and one of the nicest features is that you can eat ANYWHERE in the hotel: your room, the beach, one of the many antique-filled grand halls, etc. It really can be quite romantic, depending on which area you choose to dine at.

Beds are very comfortable with beautiful linens--rooms are HUGE, by the way--and the best water pressure in a shower I've ever had in Southeast Asia. The whole places smells of frangipani--although, admittedly, it can be a bit much.

This all said, I can't help but feel this place is a bit too museum-like for me. I'm almost scared to talk here it's so austere. Absolutely worth a gander for a night or two max--but I gotta say, we were already a bit bored here (it's so removed from even Seminyak) that we called Putu early and we're going to go tour with his Dad for the day (before our 4 days touring with him next week) just so we could get out and see some things.

That's it for now, kids...more to come from Borobudur in a few days.

The afternoon rains must not have arrived yet, although I hear it's a dry wet season there this year.

If you get down to Seminyak for dinner, check out a new place called Sardine. I hear it's pretty good.

So the question is:

Is Bali part of Southeast Asia?

Inquiring pandas want to know.

Say hi to Putu from Bob and Andy.
