Borobudur Temple in Indonesia

http://www.boncherry.com/blog/2008/0...-in-indonesia/

In the 19th century, Dutch occupiers of Indonesia found a massive ancient ruin deep in the jungles of Java. What they discovered was the complex of Borobudur, a gigantic structure built with nearly 2 million cubic feet (55,000 m³) of stones. The temple has nearly 2,700 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues.

Offwego,
Let me know if you have other question about Indonesia!
I would also recommend Lombok Island which is next to Bali.

Hi wild - I've been looking at your other posts. I'm kinda puzzled. Are these your pictures? They're amazing.

O.K...
So - do I get this right?

You steal [compile] someone else's pictures and put them on your site -without attribution.

Then you steal someone else's text and put it on your site - without attribution.

And that's all.

And the point of this is...?

I have been to the Pyramids, to Siem Reap in Cambodia...in Bali again this December...
considering day trip to Borobudur...is it that different to Siem Reap..or similar`?
Real question...is it different enough worth the trip.

I responded to your same question yesterday. Borobudor is very different from Angkor and very different from the pyramids, very different from anything you'll see in Bali. Borobudor is the largest Buddhist monument in the world; it is not a wat (temple). The temples you see in Bali are Hindu, of course, and quite different from Borobudor. The temples at Angkor are a mix of Buddhist and Hindu temples.

My trip to central Java remains one of my favorites. We visited not just Borobudor (which is certainly the most impressive of the many interesting places in central Java) but also Prambanam, the Dieng Plateau, etc. We also saw a portion of the Ramayana ballet while we were there. I also consider the crafts shopping in central Java to be the best of any place I've been. Personally, I believe it merits more than a day trip from Bali, but a day trip is better than none.

KJF:
I think you should start your own topic to receive more feedback. Regarding Borobudur temple near Yogja its worth the trip IMHO. The temple itself is unique on its form and placement, actually most of pictures around the web do not do justice to the site. In person the temple is really interresting and beatiful with detailed stone carving and of course the pagodas/chedis. Bear in mind that Borobudur is a Budist temple, while Angkor is a Hinduist.

There is a Hindu complex also near Yogjakarta, "Prambanan", which is also very interresting (not as grand to Siem Reap Kmer temples).

I think you can do it but at side trip from Bali not a "day trip" since you will be 1hr flight away (+transfers, etc.) So its better to sleep one or two nights. Try to search this site for more info on these sites. Regards

jcontreras, the temples at Angkor are not all Hindu. Some are Hindu, some are Buddhist, some started out as one and were converted to the other... the history is really rather complex.

Hi KJF,
I agree with Kathie and jcontreras that Yogyakarta, Borobudur, and nearby Prambanan are well worth a side trip from Bali if time and budget permits. It really is a stunning site to arrive in the early morning and having the place to yourself for a little while before all the other travelers arrive.
And yes, it would be great to visit Yogya for a couple days or so but even if it's only for a daytrip, it's still worth it imo.

Some of the things I bought in the area: traditional puppets, batik (especially silk batik, but also, on cotton the intricate tulis designs), wood carvings.

We spent a week in the area and visited many places in the area. But as seagypsy says it would be worthwhile even if you only have a day... find more time if you can.
