The best snorkeling is around Menjangan Island off the northwest coast. We stayed in Lovina (at Domai, which is probably not "reasonable") and did a day trip (1-1/2 hours each way). There are probably places to stay that are closer and maybe someone else can chime in on this. Note that although the snorkeling is spectacular, we were dismayed at the trash (plastic bags etc.) floating in the water.

Tulamben the famous Liberty wreck. You can also take a look at Coral Garden dive site, about 20 meters east of the Liberty wreck. It is a very shallow site, has a lot of marine life. www.scubaboard.com Bali great info on this other options.

Keep in mind the dryer the season the better the sonorkel

asiaroooms.com hostelbookers.com good cheap lodging...

I like Menjangan Island too. You can stay in Pemuteran. The Taman Sari is nice.

Pemuteran is a pleasant sleepy place, but I must warn you that there's really no beach to speak of. The area right on the water is kind of scruffy.

Villa Ganesha, nearby Tami Sari, may be too pricy to consider, but you can still take advantage of their restaurant. Specialty is healthy stuff but you can get a range of food and wine, that is surprisingly sophisiticated and good.

Menjangan is good because it's shallow, but you have to take a boat out every time. You can''t stay there.

Lovina had surprisingly good snorkeling, again by boat, but close and cheap.

Liberty wreck is deep below you, so you can snorkel, but it's way down below.
