For a first-timer, I'd highly recommend either Thailand or Indonesia.

In southeast asia I would do one of the following:
1- Bangkok side trip to Amphawa or none
2- Hanoi side trip to Ninh Binh
3- HCMC side trip to mekong delta
4- Luang prabang + vang vieng or vientiane
5- Siem reap + Phnom Phen
6- Bali OR Java

From my experience I would pick Bangkok or Hanoi. Great cultural shock, amazing people watching food and life in the streets. Possibility to balance with calmer surroundings.

In Thailand, I'd recommend Bangkok plus a short beach stay or Bangkok plus a day trip to Ayutthaya or just Bangkok. Thailand is still a very safe place to visit.

In Indonesia, I'd recommend Bali. You can opt for a few days in the Ubud area and a few days in a beachside area, such as Sanur.

Fora first trip to Asia you cannot beat Bangkok as it has one of the best tourist infrastructure around and too many things to see and do that you will easily fill one week there.

I would do Siem Reap and one of the following, depending on your interests: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Luang Prabang, or a beach location in Thailand (or somewhere in Vietnam but I can't comment as I haven't been yet!).

Obviously Thailand as there is diversity. No Thailand is not under "marshall" law (sic). It is not even under martial law.

Thailand is still under martial law - although it is unlikely that most tourists will notice anything different..... unless they get into a heated argument about the coup or blocked web sites with the wrong people .

Kathie is spot on, for 1 week, Thailand (Bangkok + Ayutthaya + beach) is the best choice. Indonesia is another great option, but you need at least 2-3 weeks to cover the must-do places (Yogya + Flores + Komodo + Bali + ...)

Apparently Bangkok is a hot-spot for Chinese tourists at the moment, with 300,000 being there.

And if what I've been watching [UK Channel 4 news] is accurate, their behaviour isn't going down too well.

Ayuttaya is a good side trip, but the Kanchanaburi area is better and deserves a couple of full days to soak in the atmosphere.

Penang is another popular tourist spot. The city has popular street food likes Penang assam laksa, nasi kandar and many more. In George Town, it has other beautiful buildings to see from Pinang Peranakan Mansion and Khoo Kongsi. They are ranked quite high in Travel Advisor website.

For nature, Penang has the world smallest national park and have turtle sanctuary centre to visit. Let me know if you want to know about the city.
