My favourite clean, not so crowded beach is inside the Wing 5 Thai Royal Air Force Base at Prachuap Khiri Khan (PKK). It's called Ao Maneo Beach, and set in a wonderfully scenic bay. The sea is generally calm, not to deep, and great for swimming.
Monday to Thursday the beach is very quiet, but mobbed at the weekend by coach loads of Thais from Bangkok.
The beach is kept immaculately clean by young Thai RAF servicemen.
There are a few food courts selling excellent seafood, rice and chicken dishes opposite the beach. Choose a sunbed and table, and the food will be delivered in minutes.
We got to PKK by train from Bangkok (Hualamphong), stayed in PKK for a week, and hired pushbikes to get to the Air Base and beach.
The train we caught to get to PKK was the 0805 No43, destination Surat Thani. Took 4 hours passing through lovely scenery, and cost about 400 baht, which included a meal. You have to reserve seats as there are only two carriages with no standing allowed. I reserved 2 days before we went in person at Hualamphong train station.
All visitors have to do is sign in and out at the main gate. The beach is about 2km inside the Air Base, and you even have to cycle across the runway to get to it!
PKK is a laid back provincial town, a secret gem, so keep it secret!

Hau Hin is a 3 hour drive from BKK. A lot of hotel options at all price points, as well as place to eat. There are jelly fish at some times of the year, but I don't know exactly when that is. Very pretty area

If you fly, don't forget to include door to door travelling time.
And clean, and not so crowded takes a bit of research to get what you want. Hence the detailed reply that I posted at the top of the thread.
