Looking at a two night stay in January at the end of a three week trip to Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. Travelling with my wife and our two boys aged 13 and 15.
Going round in circles at either booking the Horizon Club at the Shangri La Wing or the Krungthep Wing. Initial concern with the Krungthep Wing is comment that the accommodation is now dated and some rooms suffer from nearby traffic noise. On the other hand conscious that busy time of year and Shangri La Wing will be very busy including the breakfast buffet.
Allowing for above any advise from travellers on:
- Recent stays in either option
- Which option may be more suitable as travelling with children ?
- Is it likely offers will come forward later in the year or just as well booking now, as it will be busy season ?
- Any benefit in joining Golden Circle, if that is still an option ?
- Is there another hotel out there that I should consider ?
Any comments much appreciated.
Bangkok - Shangri La Wing or Krungthep Wing ?

Warm greetings hamcam and warm greetings to Fodor's.
Have always been partial to the Krungthep Wing, home to one of my all-time favourite Bangkok business travel rooms. (Which has recently been rather well renovated.) Wonderful staff and friends in both wings, including some fine 'personal butlers' in the K Wing. (If so inclined, I've posted a review of the Shangri-La on my profile page.)
I've received fine benefits from the Golden Circle programme over the years (particularly since I also stay at a SL property in Hong Kong for work).
Your children should enjoy either wing. (I've always noticed more children in the main wing.)
The Shangri-La is always coming out with various offers. As for other hotels in Bangkok, you have many fine options. Riverside is always fun for families. I recently stayed at the St. Regis ('in town') for work and that rather new property is very special -- I plan on returning there for meetings in late July.
Wherever you stay have fun - in the Land of Smiles.

join the club for sure... discounts, late check out and breakfast free or discounted...
kh-th is closer to sky train and its pool is nicer... ask to be away from the bridge and up high...
There are plenty of other places to consider on the river. You might want to get either a two bedroom suite or else a small suite and an adjoining room so you all have some privacy. Consider Chatrium and the Royal Orchid Sheraton as alternatives. I don't know about the Hilton Millenium's room arrangements, but they may well be able to accommodate you in a similar suiite set up.
If you would prefer a serviced apartment, consider the Centrepoint Silom, which is virtually next door to the Shangri-La.
I should have added earlier that at the beginning of the trip three nights booked at the Chatrium.
Is it right the Shangri La Wing has been refurbished but not the Krungthep ? It would also be helpful if anyone could advise if it is an option to have a suite in the Krungthep with an adjacent room ?
I stayed in the refurbished Shangri-La wing in January 2010. Debated about paying extra for the Krungthep wing. Krungthep wing is closer to the public transport (but not much so) but I understood that the S-La wing had a more vareid breakfast. I think we missed out on some lounge benefits but I was was pregnant and could not take advantage of the free cocktails in the K wing. The S-La wing was fine.
Warm greetings again hamcam and if still following thread, an update for you and future BKK Shangri-La business/leisure travellers. (Last week, I spent five nights at the Island Shangri-La in Hong Kong for meetings and received some interesting bits of news concerning her Bangkok sister.)
Can assure you some rather fine room/suite renovations have been completed in the Krungthep Wing. Concerning suite/room arrangements for you and your family, will kindly suggest contacting the Wing directly. The Wing does have some rather unique layouts, including a few apartments (more geared for long-term stays) that are very special. (And will add the hotel did a magnificent job of renovating my favourite business travel room with new bed, furniture, carpet and colour schemes, among other enhancements.)
The Krungthep Wing staff: some of the best around, and I was informed in Hong Kong that two fine Island SL employees will soon be transferred to the Bangkok property.
I was also told in HK that the BKK Shangri-La will soon be celebrating her 25th anniversary with a few parties beginning ~ 2 August. Perhaps some of you out there will be able to partake in the festivities. I'll probably be back home in Singapore (or SFO), as my next round of Bangkok meetings will be late next week (and staying once again at the St. Regis - love that place and her current corporate 'intro' rates).
Have fun with your planning.
