Yes, I did it a few years ago (not retirement, just purchase of round the world air ticket). At the time I used airtreks.com, and I have used them for multi-destination trips since then. They have an outstanding reputation, their CEO (or president) is the author of Practial Nomad, a well known book about planning independent travel.

congratulations! am happy for you
the airline alliances have rtw fares. For example, you could check out http://www.star-alliance.com/
Follow the Airpasses link (about center of page near top).
I've read that it is less expensive to buy the pass in some places outside of the USA. Suggest you go to flyertalk.com and see what help is there.

Kai- Good for you! I did this in reverse in 1981 (didn't buy a house, didn't start a job) and spent nearly a year traveling around the world. I had a wonderful time.
When I did my India/boston/Oregon/LA trip a year ago, I looked into the star alliance RTW. (Had a travel agentthat was able to do the same trip for me for a bit less since I had all set times and dates for my much shortened RTW).It is great in that you have one year to travel- all in basically the same direction- and flights can be changed without penalty as you go. You'd probably reserve some to avoid filled planes.
Beyond the flights, you can just trravel on the fly...book hotels in the next country before you leave the current one. Or not, if you really want to roam. With internet access everywhere, there's really no need to totally lock yourself into a schedule.
Where are your dream destinations?
Throw them out here, and I'm sure you know we'll all throw in our 2 cents worth!
Congratulations! Want to kick off your trip with a GTG in Honolulu?

Sounds wonderful, divediva!
I've done a few RTW trips and will do another in February. You will find that you have a lot of different options for the type of ticket you can buy, and each of those options has advantages and disadvantages. The only real way to decide which will be best for you is to do some studying, look hard at your priorities, and then go for it.
I'd suggest that you begin by identifying the things that are non-negotiable -- places that you absolutely want to visit, etc. Then learn about the up- and down-side of different RTW plans, figure out possible itineraries, and go from there.
I would certainly encourage you to do as much of the planning by yourself. You can get more information here on Fodor's and some other sites than any travel agent or tour company can possibly provide.
FlyerTalk (www.flyertalk.com) is a terrific place to learn about RTWs. Go to the section about airline alliances. Expect to change your mind/plans leventy-seven different times during the process, but that's part of the fun (if it doesn't drive you & your travel companion crazy).

To save money, spend more time in Asia and South America. Places like America, Canada, Australia, NZ, Europe are expensive and your money will soon go.
Pick up some good guide books, like Lonely Planet, and use the internet when possible to book yourself some cheap accommodation and for city information.
Check on the weather. You do not want to arrive in an area in the middle of heavy monsoon rains or the possibility of a hurricane. And you don't really want to travel around places in mid-winter.

(good plan, dperry)
divediva, what a wonderful trip it will be! I'm planning to do this a few years from now. Keep us all posted on what you decide! A friend of mine did such a trip, She found that the best way to book it was directly with the main airline. She was going with Star Alliance so talked with the agents at United. She said they were so helpful, and they really knew the routes and options. I guess they have a special few agents that deal specifically with RTW tickets.
