10 day Thailand Itinerary
Hey all,
And friend and I are traveling to Thailand end of March and were thinking if anyone had advice on must-do activities or things to skip?
We will be there 10 full days (excluding the 3 days of plane travel).
We were thinking 2-3 days Bangkok, take overnight train to Chiang Mai 3-4 days, then fly to the south islands for 3-4 days.
Any day tours or activity suggestions and tips would be great! Its our first time to Asia.
Also, any recommendations on good backpacks?
Thanks!

Forget about the north in March. Nice as it is, it is the middle of the burning season and most years it will be very smoky. Add a day to Bangkok and then get the train south to the Andaman coast.
Pick your island carefully. Some are party islands, some quiet. this is good resource for helping with the decision making process. also good for activities.
Backpacks - if you can travel light i.e. carryon only. should be easy for a couple of weeks. I use the Lowe Alpine TT40 Carryon. Osprey have a similar one http://www.ospreyeurope.com/gb_en/farpoint-40-14. saves having to wait around for bags at carousels etc. with the risk that they may not arrive at all!
Unlikely but still a risk i can do without!

One suggestion is to spend the last night or two back in Bangkok. That way you can do last minute shopping and not arrive at the airport at the last minute. Last minute flights might be delayed or cancelled. Replacing a long distant flight back home can be expensive.
In Bangkok there are easy to sign up for shared tours you can get through one of the many travel agencies and some hotels with tour desks. Choose tour from their list of popular tours one day and leave following morning. Good for the out of town tourist sites. In Bangkok you can sign up for dinner cruises too. Big cities popular with tourists also have shared tours you can sign onto if you want.
Burning season. Some tourists still take a chance and visit Chiang Mai for a few days. Sometimes they are lucky. A visit is not like living there day after day!
