USAirways Envoy Class Airbus 333 to Europe

A couple of questions: how nice is Envoy Class on the Airbus? And also, if I buy a full fare ticket and there are seats available in Envoy (according to the seat plan online), can I easily use my FF miles to upgrade to Envoy? Never tried this before. Merci!

Study this page:

http://www.usairways.com/awa/content...eupgrades.aspx

You can upgrade with miles, only if you book your coach tickets in Y, B, M, H or Q classes. For Y and B, you pay 10,000 miles for each way for the upgrade; M, H or Q, you pay 30,000 each way. Other classes are not mileage-upgradeable.

Before you buy your expensive coach tickets, call and check for upgrade availability and prices for each of those fares, and decide if you want to pay more money (Y/B) or more miles (M/H/Q). And to make sure there are confirmed upgrade seats at that time.

You do not want to pay big money on a coach fare and then end up in the back because there's no upgrades available.

Upgrade availability has nothing to do with how many seats open up front. Airlines can and will fly with empty business class seats and not allow upgrades.

Thanks, rkkwan; I have been looking at that page, but can't find the class on the reservation page. Do I need to call airine for that?

Okay, since I hardly fly USAirways, I don't know too much about their website. But I just tried a mock booking for PHL-LGW 10/15-10/19.

If I just search for cheapest available, I get a $1652 "M" fare. Once you get to the page that list the Grand Total price, you'll see something in the detail that says:

PHL to LGW - Fare Basis MX0NC

The first letter "M" is your fare class. So, this fare requires 30,000 miles each way to upgrade.

If I change my search to unrestricted coach, I got $1,863 "B" fare that only requires 10,000 miles to upgrade each way.

40,000 miles is worth a lot more than $200.

But that's just an example; other flights may have cheaper H or Q class. And you still need to call to find out whether there's upgrade availability or particular flights and particular fare.

I'd do the booking over the phone too, even if it costs you a few dollars. You want to get the ticket and your confirmed upgrade right away.

Thank you for your help; I did call USAirways for info and agree that it's the way to do it to make sure I have both the flight and the upgrade. At this point, it's just a "hypothetical" but hope to make the booking a reality w/in next couple of days.

Well,I'm in Coach again; class Y or B cost over twice as much: $920 vs $1900; since PIT lost hub status a couple of years ago, USAirways has very little competition, and we pay top dollar to get anywhere.
For a couple hundred dollars it sure would have been worth it, but not for what I'm finding.
