SFO runway closures ?

Over on Trip Advisor people are worried about using SFO because of runway closures? Concerned about delayed and cancelled flights. Even changing tickets to avoid it at substantial additional cost.

Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks.

Please allow me to rephrase my question.

Is there anyone who has first- or second-hand information about the current situation for Alaska Air flights landing at SFO who would be willing to share it with me here?

I have already read all the articles I could find online about it.

The issues seem to be almost exclusively around weekends, when they are doing some of the heavier work. Delays last weekend were in the 4 hour range. I landed yesterday and everything seemed normal, consistent with the story that it is centered around weekend runway closures.

Here is the schedule for runway closures for the next few weeks:

Friday, April 28 at 6 p.m. through Monday, May 1 at 12 p.m.
Friday, May 5 at 11:59 p.m. through Sunday, May 7 at 12 p.m.
Friday, May 12 at 11 p.m. through Monday, May 15 at 8 a.m.
Friday, May 19 at 6 p.m. through Monday, May 22 at 12 p.m.
Friday, June 2 at 6 p.m. through Monday, June 5 at 12 p.m.
Friday, June 9 at 6 p.m. through Monday, June 12 at 12 p.m.
Friday, June 16 at 6 p.m. through Monday, June 19 at 12 p.m.

Are you connecting? If so, I'd call and see if they are potentially issuing waivers that would let you reroute. Otherwise, you may be left crossing your fingers that they learned their lesson after this weekend and do a better job mitigating. Sorry.

Maybe wait until this weekend and see if things improve over what happened last weekend. Last weekend more than 200 flights were cancelled (not counting several Alaska flights that were diverted to OAK) so I assume the airlines and airport authority are working on how to improve things going forward.

But you know what 'assume' means

Good luck.

Can you just use OAK?

The ticket was purchased ages ago. I am sure I would have to pay for any changes at this point.

Oh and no, there are no onward Alaska flights to Mexico out of Oakland. I would need to change to SW.

I would call and ask. They may have instituted a waiver if they anticipate substantial delays.

suze, i saw your post on thread about shipping from Mexico. I just signed up in order to message you and not sure how to other than to reply here. Sorry I am not of help to your current situation, but I am crossing my fingers you may have some advice for me.
I had a plate hand painted special/custom for anniversary while in riviera maya last week. On wed, may 3 the lady that painted it held it while i went to pool so I wouldnt break it, but in a rush to get to airport I left it there! I am trying to have it sent to me and you seemed to know a bit about shipping. How can I have this fragile item shipped to me, i do not care that it will most likely cost $100, i just want my gift.

suze's flight was last weekend so she may or may not check back into this thread (old news and all).

I suggest you post over on the Mexico forum with a thread title something like "Shipping from Mexico? Suze or anyone else?"

Good luck.

sorlando2~~

Sorry for the delay, I was in Puerto Vallarta.

And also sorry I really don't know anything about shipping from Mexico. The most I have sent is postcards, or small parcels that were of no value (fabric, hankie, dish towel, etc.) and i just used the post office... which I most definitely do NOT recommend for this -lol!

I believe DHL, Fed Ex, or a local shipping service center (like in PV there's one called Mail Boxes) would be the way to go.

buena suerte, suze

Oh and SFO was an absolutely disaster - both directions - I am going to avoid using that airport in the future even if it means facing LAX. Phoenix was always a breeze, I miss US Air.

Nothing to do with closed runways though.

Why? I fly in and out of SFO and find it really easy.

suze - we flew from OAK to PVR - non stop on Southwest. They just began this itinerary in February. It was so easy! Customs took all of five minutes. And way less expensive than what we are used to paying. Highly recommended.

Why?

Partly Alaska and flight delays and time changes so timing was short. Partly having to change terminals.

Security checkpoint was *seriously* backed up with lines winding around thru the maze.

I had one checked bag so had to pick it up, clear customs, then you had to hump your luggage to the next terminal with you, there was no place to immediately check it back in after clearing, like you usually find.

Oh and thank YOU SCdreamer. Will look into the Southwest option. Lots of the PV folks (like from Portland) strongly like that airline for this route.
