Our first overseas flight but scared - please help!
Hi, my sister and me are flying from Toronto to Tokyo for our first time overseas. We're really excited... BUT... the airline just changed our flight a bit.
Originally, we left Toronto at 9:15 and changed in Chicago, with a 2 and a half hour layover before boarding our flight to japan at 12:35pm.
But now they changed it so we don't leave until 11:20am and we have exactly 30 minutes to make our connection.
I'm really worried, because if we are late or get stuck in security (do we have to go through security again at Chicago?) we'll miss our flight to Japan and possibly lose all our money?!?! because the flight is all booked at once, on one ticket, BUT it's American Airlines to Chicago and then Japan Airlines to Tokyo. So one airline might not care that another one was late.
Should I be worried? And is there anything I can do?

When the airline makes a schedule change, you have the opportunity to change your flight without a fee.
Check the schedule and see if there is an earlier flight out of Toronto that will give you a longer layover in Chicago.
The same thing happened to us with American Airlines and I was able to book an earlier flight that I was more comfortable with and there was no change fee.

Call which ever airline you booked the flights with - they will most likely change one or the other flight. Because they booked it as one ticket they will be responsible for getting you to Tokyo, and you won't lose your money. But 30 minutes isn't long enough - it isn't what they call a 'legal connection'.
So they will fix this if they can.

>>>But now they changed it so we don't leave until 11:20am and we have exactly 30 minutes to make our connection.<<<
International flights start boarding an hour before departure and the doors will close 10 minutes before so that would only give your 20 minutes to make your flight. I would allow 2 hours connection.
