Alitalia
We're flying Alitalia from JFK to Rome, then Rome to Venice in Nov. I've read some good reviews and some pretty bad ones. The price was right and itinerary exactly what we need, so we'll use them regardless. Just wondering what to expect. Also, am I correct that I can't choose our seats until 24 hrs. prior to departure? Thanks.

Sky trax has them rated as middle of the road based on passenger reviews.

A couple of years back, my daughter and I flew UA to Rome, with a changeover in Frankfurt. My sister, on the other hand, found a flight direct to Rome on Alitalia, an airline I avoid whenever possible. I told her, "You're flying Alitalia into Fiumicino Airport, you may as well fill out the lost luggage form on the plane." Sure enough, they lost her checked luggage, though they did get it to our hotel two days later. Oh, and her plane was three hours late.
If you can manage to fly with just carry-on and your schedule isn't too tight, you'll be OK. Other than that, I'd invest in some of the new luggage tracking technology, and make sure your bags have good identification inside and out.

Personally, I don't think Alitalia offers worse service or comfort than any of the US-based carriers. But I think they have a bigger issue with lost bags. I'd also do carry-on if possible, but that may not be possible given the domestic leg.

Thanks for the responses. We pretty much travel with carry on only these days so lost luggage won't be an issue. Sounds like they are about on par with most other airlines. Thanks again to everyone for the info.

1965 - what was your experience? I'm looking to fly NY-Sicily and Alitalia is by far the best for cost and schedule.
Like you, I accept that this will be the carrier I use, but would like to know what to expect as well.

Progol we don't fly until Nov. 5. When we return Nov. 25 I'll post my experience. One of my concerns was not being able to pick our seats so hubby and I can sit together. I was able to do that. The configuration for the long haul portion is 2-6-2, so I was able to select 2 seats together, aisle and window. So looking forward to our cruise, even looking forward to the flight. Sounds a little weird I know. But I love travel, the total experience and adventure, including the flights.
