Will be there in Sept. '08
Need recommendations for a nice hotel in a good, safe area. Heard the Westcliff is nice but is difficult to get around there. Either walk up steep hills or wait for a golf cart. Also heard it is not near anything. We have no idea what Joburg is like or any of the areas. We will be flying there and staying 3 nights before we go on to Cape Town and our safari. Day one we will probably sleep after the long flight. Any recommendations welcome!

I would say it is 2 days too many. My wife and I stayed in Sandton and after going to the mall and seeing Mandela square we were wishing we would have flown out the night before. Unless you have good friends in Joburg, I would personally spend the least amount of time in Joburg that I can.

I stayed at the Westcliff on my first visit -- its a very nice hotel, but I had to rely on the shuttle.
I spent two days in Johannesburg, visiting Soweto and other areas of Johannesburg on one day and spending the other in Pretoria.
It depends what you want to see, but there is much more in Africa than safaris.

I am rethinking staying in Joburg for more than the night. I haven't heard anything nice about the place.
We get to Joburg at 4:25 p.m. Will stay at an airport hotel just to get sleep and go on the Cape Town the next day.

The Grace hotel in Rosebank is wonderful. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but if you do stay in JoBurg for more than just an overnight at the airport, check it out. If you are looking for a JoBurg airport hotel, the Southern Sun is convenient and reasonably priced. I prefer the Intercontinental which I think has now changed names, but it is a little more expensive. But, IMO opinion, it is a little nicer, and it is also more convenient to the airport.
