What to do in Nairobi before flight

Our flight from Tanzania Under Canvas to Nairobi arrives at 15:00. Our BA flight doesn't leave until 23:35. On our way in we have a day at Giraffe Manor so we should have seen it, the Elephant Orphanage and Carnivores. Does it make sense to rent a dayroom? Should we just hang out in the BA business lounge? Thanks for any suggestions!

A dayroom will run about $150 +/- so you have to decide what you wish for a 6/hrs before a 9pm transfer to airport or spend 8/hrs at the airport.

If you have to do some last minute shopping, wish to repack your bags, spa services, pools, shower, business centers, have dinner, it's much easier at a hotel day-room.

For shopping it's best to be in the downtown area where taxis are easily available to take you wherever... even walk. The Intercontinental, Stanley are close to shopping. The Serena and Norfolk a bit further away requiring taxis. Though places out in Karen, are a bit more lux, you may be better in the downtown area.

Up to you!

Marija - Haven't the foggiest. Don't do lounges as I prefer to spend as little time in an airport (even a lounge). Even in AMS, in BC lounge for a long-layover it was torture; left and found a great bar in the terminal which was way more fun and better food. See if others may have spent time here for details.

Try a search on the BA board at Flyertalk and you might be able to find some comments. You may need to register first in order to use the search function on that site.

In mid-June, we arrived from Tanzania at the Nairobi airport about 5:30 pm - we were flying out on the same flight as you that night - we went out for a few hours for supper. I couldn't imagine sitting in the airport there for more than 2 hours - seats are uncomfortable. I couldn't say what the business class lounge was like though - I didn't see one at all - but that doesn't mean it wasn't there! The girl at the desk told us to be back by 9 pm - we wondered why so early, but we did as she said. And good job we did! We went through 4 different security checks - 2 with our checked bags and carry on, and the last two with just the carry on. ALL FOUR security checks checked at least one of our bages each time - thoroughly.

My advice would be to hire a guide/driver to take you shopping, or for supper, or sightseeing or something!

If I were you I would either get a day room at a cheap but cheerful hotel ($50 would be my limit since it would basically be the cost of a hot shower and a changing room) dump my bags there and get a taxi to do some just-before-closing shopping and then have a quick dinner, returning in time to take a shower before the night flight .... or do what Lynda suggests... nice time for an evening game drive in Nairobi National Park maybe, followed by dinner at a restaurant in Karen before returning to the airport. Got to be better than Nairobi airport!
