Trip delayed-need advice

Hi:

With three weeks to go before I headed to Tanzania and Zanzibar I went and broke my ankle last night playing ice hockey. I'm guessing I will be laid up for 8 weeks. I planned the trip to coincide with the Wildebeest Migration. Now I'm wondering if August would still be a good time (not just for the migration, but weather-wise, etc.) or should I put the trip off to another time? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce,

August is very good weather wise. But you may hv to go to the Mara for the migration.

I'm sorry about your injury. Weather would be fine, in fact probably better wildlife viewing conditions outside of the Serengeti. You will not see as much of the migration in Tanzania in August as June. If you could switch your Serengeti days to the Masai Mara, all would be fine.

Please post again on your decision--and your ankle.

Sorry to hear about your broken ankle. The Mara would be better for migration viewing in August, but you may need to scramble to get accomodations.

You've got a positive attitude already. Good for you! I believe that things happen for a reason - so there's gotta be something better on the other side.

Do hope you have good insurance. If you do use insurance to make this change, will you advise how it goes? True test of an insurance company is what they will do in case of claims.

Mara is an option - but so could S. Tanzania too? Not migration, but very different experience. Really, though, if you want to go to Tanzania - do it anyway. There's probably many people who "plan" to see the migration and miss it anyway only to love the safari regardless.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I guess after years of National Geographic specials I've become fixated on seeing the migration. Maybe it's time to open up the options.

Hello Bruce,

I'm really sorry to hear about your ankle -- hope it mends quickly!

I'd also second the recommendation to consider Southern Tanzania, which is at its best in August/September. The Selous and Ruaha have far fewer visitors than the northern parks and would offer a really remote wilderness experience.

Another option would be combining some time in the northern or southern parks with Western Tanzania (Katavi and Mahale). Katavi is probably the least visited park in Tanzania, and you could go chimp trekking at Mahale (if your ankle is up to it).

Cheers,
Julian

If you think someday you may be able to return to Africa in the future, then I'd recommend substituting the Mara for Southern Tanzania also. Though I've never been there, it is on my list and gets rave reviews.

Or you delay the Tanzania trip for Februrary, also a good time in the Serengeti, but not at the same camps/lodges as you would choose for August.
