Spain and Africa in 6 weeks... how do I make this work?

Hi everyone,

After 2+ years of travel and living abroad I'm making my way home!

I'm based in the UK at the moment and have got about 6-7 weeks in Jan/Feb next year to try and see the rest of what is on my 'travel list'.

The problem is that the places left I'm desperate to see don't seem all that logical to do together and I'm hoping someone out there has some advice on the best way to try and see them all.

The places I want to go are:
- Spain: Barcelona for 5 or so days and explore some other cities (still to be decided)!
- Egpyt: we will be doing a 7 day tour of all the main sites
- African safari: I really have my heart set on doing a 2-3 week trip through Kenya/Tanzania and Uganda. I know it might not make sense to do it with this trip, but it is so much harder and more expensive to do it from home than it is from back home. It's something I've wanted to do for so long...

So what do you all think? Too ambitious?
What do you think would be the best and easiest travel route to incorporate these places?

Thanks in advance!

It's doable I think. Fly to the furthest point in sub Saharan Africa first (BA has non stops to Nairobi) and do the safari portion from that base, then from Nairobi you can fly to Cairo on Kenya Airways. And Egyptair has a non stop from Cairo to Barcelona.....then home from Barcelona.

7 days is too short for Egypt IMHO and I'd add Jordan into the mix as well.

Jessie - I think you are trying to sip from a fire-hose and you are going to end up all wet. If you jam these trips together you will not enjoy them one tiny fraction as much as they deserve.

I think you could pull off two of your destination/experiences in that time frame. As Elizabeth said 7 days is too short for Egypt. To go from Abu Simbel to Alexandria and see the major sights, along with the accompanying light shows, unfinished obelisk, felucca rides, balloon trips, markets, Nile cruise, museums, etc., would be two weeks of pretty steady motion.

Likewise Southern Africa (Safaris, Vic Falls, Cape Town, water camp, dry camp, vineyards, markets, Boulder Beach, township visits, Kirstenbosch gardens, Robbin Island, etc.) would be a couple weeks at least.

Same thing Uganda, Kilimanjaro, Kenya, gorillas, etc. anyway I think you get the point. By the end of all this traveling you would be a massive wreck. I think you would be a little overwhelmed doing just two of your excursions in a six week period. But it is logistically possible if you get right on it.

Spain is a walk in the park to get to from the UK. It's also very easy planning and logistics-wise compared to your other destinations.

My best advice is maybe do Southern Africa and Spain, Egypt and Spain, or Kenya/Tanzania/Uganda and Spain. Do whatever you've left off later. You will enjoy the trips much more than trying the travel treadmill route. Good Luck.

We went to Cairo for four days and then flew to Barcelona as Elizabeth says for six days. It was great. Mind you we don't tell people we have visited Egypt and Spain, just Cairo and Barcelona.

We visit specific places rather than countries.

7 weeks = 49 days
8 days for Spain, being generous
10 days for Egypt, being generous

49-18 = 31

31-4 for transportation days between Spain and Egypt and to get to your safari part of your trip. = 27

27 - 2 days to get "back home" wherever that is, leaves 25 days for Kenya/Tanzania and Uganda.

If the money holds out, that's enough time for Kenya/Tanzania and Uganda, in fact more time than most people have.

Is the above breakdown in line with your goals JessieMJ?

I think apportioning days is a starting point to know what you have to work with. Then let the planning begin!

My best part of advise is in East Africa. You can combine Tanzania and Kenya in 14 days spending 7 days in each country. Uganda alone with its Mountain Gorillas and chimpanzees, you can spare for it 11 days including your departure day. With in these 25 days, you will explore a lot in Africa. am not sure of Barcelona and Egypt. Can send me a Personal message. I will help you on this if help is needed.
