Petra: 2 days or 3 days?

I am planning a trip to Jordan, I would like to know how many days would be good enough for Petra? I am into photography, so I could always do with extra time, but is 3 days an overkill?
What are the things I could do in 3 days? Any hikes in and around? And I would be spending 2-3 more days in Wadi Rum too.

Are you asking about three nights/two days vs. four nights/three days? I had two full days (i.e. three nights) at Petra and had no trouble filling the time (see http://kwilhelm.smugmug.com/Travel/C...ast-2009/Petra ). If I had had a third full day I would have gone to Little Petra. Don't forget about Petra by Night - it doesn't happen every night.

There is much more to see than just the Treasury, but you do have to do some walking to get there. (Well, I suppose you could ride a donkey if you had to.) The High Place of Sacrifice and the Monastery, for instance.
