Egypt in April - are mosquitoes a problem?

I've searched the web and have seen differing accounts of whether mosquitoes are a problem in Egypt, so I'm wondering if anyone can set the matter at rest. I'm going to Egypt in April - Cairo, Abu Simbel, Aswan, Luxor and Alexandria. Alexandria is a day trip from Cairo, but we'll stay at least one night in each of the other cities and take a three night Nile cruise. Do you think mosquitoes will be a problem anywhere? If so, can I get good mosquito repellant locally? I pack light, allowing myself one carry-on size suitcase that I always check, so anything I can buy locally at a reasonable cost, I do.

Sorry, I don't know about April but I had no problem in Sept/Oct 2010 anywhere I went, Cairo, Alexandria, Nile Cruise, Aswan, Luxor. No mozzies!

An OFF made in Dubai is sold at most Pharmacies and it is fine. If you are staying in a hotel near the Nile, or near a canal (in Giza) or even near a garden, it is totally possible you'll have mosquitos around you.

Great, then I won't worry about the little nuisances. If we find them to be a problem, I'll just buy Off...I wasn't worried about Malaria, only itchy bites and buzzing in the ears! We will be in hotels on the Nile everywhere, which will be well worth a mosquito or two Thank you all.

Indoors, hotels and cruise boats, are air-conditioned. Mossies don't like cold.

Outdoors, wherever there is water, there's always a possibility of flying things.

But, we never encountered/heard any. No bites, no repellent... were perfectly fine. Though having a repellent if the need arises, always a good idea.

Another thing that the Pharmacies sell that is good and not very expensive is a gadget called EZALO. It's an electric gadget that you plug in the wall at night, drop a tablet into it and it keeps the little buggers out of the room all night. I'm pretty sure the gadget and the first 5 tablets or whatever comes with it would be less than $10 - maybe less than $5. Of coures it is only going to work with 220v elec so you probably won't want to take it home, but it might be worth purchasing if you have a problem with the bugs.

If mosquitoes are a problem on a balcony, I can probably plug in the EZALO and sit outside in comfort. However, from what I gather, we probably won't have much to worry about. April will be hot, but not a bother. Thanks again.

The mosquitoes are often pretty bad in the oases and the smaller villages. Elsewhere, you'd be unlucky to get a lot of mozzies. In some parts of Cairo the gov't sprays regularly with some nasty-smelling toxin that kills most of the mozzies, and anything else unfortunate enough to inhale it.

Nilefever, that's good to know as I hope to get out to Birqash for the camel market and have thought that we could combine that with visits to some smaller villages, perhaps Wadi Natrun. I'll be sure to take some some OFF.
