Dress like an Egyptian?
We will be on a several day Nile cruise. We've heard about events in which we are asked to "dress like an Egyptian." Any inexpensive way to do this for those of us who would rather spend time and money on sightseeing than shopping for an Egyptian get-up?

The "outfit" that can be purchased is relatively inexpensive. Dont think I spent more than $15.00. At one of our stops, we were told about the dress up night, and there was a market near by to buy what you needed.

Did this a few years ago (with Grand Circle) and there were cheap outfits in the gift shop for those that chose to buy. I had a white cotton jabella??? that I'd purchased in Morocco several years ago and wore that. if i remember correctly, most robes, tops, etc., could be purchased quite cheaply in the gift shop ($10-s$20.)
Not everyone chose to 'dress', but it was fun.

As mentioned, inexpensive items are available for purchase in the ship's gift shop.
When my MIL and my DH's aunt and uncle visited us, we knew this was part of the cruise, so we got them to buy stuff when we were in the Khan el Khalili in Cairo. They bought "nicer" outfits, with the intent of wearing them to various costume-y type affairs back in the US.
No problem if you don't want to dress the part....but much more fun if you do!

I agree with Grcxx3 - If you have some time in Cairo before going on the cruise, your selection and prices will be better at the Khan el Khalili. If you wait until you are on the ship to buy, you are limited and you have to pay whatever price they ask. $15 is not a horrible price to pay though, but you can get them cheaper, and certainly the quality should be better in the Khan at some shops.
Also an advantage to the Khan is you have choices of lots of types of galabayias (same thing as a jalabayia - only in Cairo we pronounce the G instead of a J), or tunic tops with pants, as well as many accessories for your head, footwear, and jewelry.
Get fixed up in Cairo at the Khan.

Besides the Bazaar in Cairo or the boat's gift shop, you'll have stops along the river (temple sites) day day of or day prior the Egyptian Nite. Outside the temples are many vendors selling similar items and the prices are good.
An adult-size gallabeya ran between $10-$13, and do bargain. We bought for ourselves and as gifts to bring home for friends/family.
