My friends are hopefully going to take a trip to Africa. I think they are looking primarily at South Africa at the moment. But the first and most important question is whether Paul will be comfortable in the jeep. Paul is probably 6'4", and husky. He has bad knees. This is their first question before they start down the road to really planning their trip.
When I was in Botswana several years ago, the jeeps felt roomy enough, but I was wondering whether anyone of about that size could give me some personal feedback.
And hopefully they will soon figure out how to get onto this wonderful site, and ask all the other questions that you all so patiently answer.
thanks
amy
Can my very tall, large friend fit into the jeeps and be comfortable.

If the vehicle is a typical land rover 4x4 he can simply sit in the front next to the driver. That way he won't have to climb up to the higher seats and will have more leg room. Plus most camps have step stools.
I'm 5'5" and found the leg room limiting in the row just behind the driver.
So have him check exactly what type of vehicle each of the camps is using.
KBC is right, some of the vehicles have panels between seat rows that do not allow you to stretch out legs. Doesn't bother me but does bother Carolyn sometimes. The seat next to driver may/may not be available. If he can get in seat row by himself, he can turn, sit sort of sideways.

DH is 6'4", 225. He has never complained about fitting in a safari vehicle in S Africa or Bots (not had the experience of the closed vehicles in E Africa). Even with his terrible back and crappy knees, he enjoys the rear seat. He can request a small bench be used so he can climb in/out easier. I hate the front seat!!
With any extenuating circumstances, height included, I think a private vehicle is a good, though more expensive, option. That way you have more control over the situation and can choose the seat you want, even if it means moving stuff out of the passenger seat, or even if it means taking over an entire row.
Good luck. It can't be fun on the airplane either at 6'4".
Hi
i'm 6'4" and have done numerous Safaris... enjoyed every one
usually i sit in the front
at the back one can stand
& there's always the middle seat to stretch the legs
