The Best Hotel in Montevideo, Uruguay

Background Illustration for Hotels

Many downtown hotels are grouped around the big three squares: Plaza Independencia, Plaza Fabini, and Plaza Cagancha. In the weeks before and after Carnaval in February, rooms become hard to come by. Otherwise, rooms are plentiful in summer, when beach-bound residents desert the city.

Originally opened in 1921 as a summer escape for the Uruguayan elite, this stunning belle époque waterfront building, known as the "palace on the sand," underwent an intensive restoration. The decadent French style, including the original gold detailing and Louis XVI–style armchairs, has been modernized in a way that makes the hotel feel both fresh and grand. Rooms include dark wood furniture, plush beds, and spacious marble baths; those on the front half of the property enjoy views of serene Carrasco Beach. Don't miss lunch or dinner at the hotel's elegant restaurant, 1921, which employs one of Uruguay's best sommeliers.

Pros

  • Attractive casino, restaurant, and bar on-site
  • Inspired spa treatments
  • Open river views from many rooms

Cons

  • A lengthy taxi ride to the sights of Montevideo
  • Showing wear and tear in places
  • Service could be sharper
