Finca La Jorará

$$$ | 470017, Colombia Fodor's Choice
A working organic farm that stretches from the coast into the hills, La Jorará offers an unbeatable experience---picture a fresh mountain stream running down from the hills to the wild, deserted beach that's bordered by lush trees that hang heavy with fruit. Spread over three lodges, the accommodations have a farm-style rusticity that integrates with the lush surrounding gardens. There's plenty to do during the day: climb up to breathtaking lookout points; splash in the river's natural pools; or take a tour of the banana plantation. Come sunset, stretch out in a hammock and listen to the forest come alive, and then saunter down to the main house for dinner at large communal tables.

Pros

  • Delicious communal meals made with ingredients from the farm
  • Adventure and cultural excursions can be arranged by the owners
  • Ready supply of freshly harvested fruit

Cons

  • Slight noise from the distant generator, and in some rooms, the road
  • No a/c, and electricity isn't available all night
  • Internet is limited

Hilton Cartagena

$$$$ | Carrera 1 No. 4–00, Cartagena, 130001, Colombia

At this hotel on the tip of the Bocagrande peninsula, the spacious, airy guests rooms can provide wide views of the city or sea, but the unattractive surroundings that lie far from the old city may disappoint. White-tile floors, pastel hues, and light wood, as well as updated baths with a rain shower, add a soothing vibe. Some rooms have great views of the terrace and its gardens and four pools, including one for kids. The beach past the impressive pool area has essentially been claimed by the hotel and is less populous than others on the peninsula, but despite touches of green remains a rather drab, gray-sand affair. Guests may feel far removed from the bustle of the old town, so decide your priorities in advance.

Pros

  • Very impressive pool
  • Access to a beach that is much less crowded that others in Bocagrande
  • Kids' club and menu

Cons

  • Mediocre food
  • Isolated, a 10- to 15-minute taxi ride to the walled town
  • The building is showing its age

Hotel San Pedro de Majagua

$$$ | Cartagena, 130001, Colombia
As long as you have realistic expectations for an isolated hotel that caters to day-trippers, you'll find Majagua to be the best, most well-priced hotel on Isla Grande. The tiny beaches are decent, but most guests spend their days out and about, snorkeling the reefs, kayaking through the mangrove forest, or visiting the nearby aquarium. Once the day-tour crowds and hawkers leave, overnight guests can rent a stand-up paddleboard and head out for sunset, or simply grab a hammock or a deck chair and a cold coconut cocktail—this, after all, is why you're here. Food options are limited to the on-site restaurant, which offers tasty, seafood-driven fare at surprisingly reasonable prices. The hotel boats—which are an additional charge—leave Cartagena at 9 am and return at 3 pm; the trip can be choppy. Snorkeling tours with Dive Planet including transportation.

Pros

  • Peace and quiet at night
  • Five-minute walk to nearby bioluminiscent Laguna Encantada

Cons

  • Bugs can be a problem
  • Location on the northern side of the island can be windy
  • Wi-Fi limited to reception area, and power outages do happen
