Traveling in Tayrona

If possible, avoid weekends or local holidays as the crowds rob most of the feeling of wild isolation that drives the park’s magic.

To avoid crowds and hiking during the hottest hours, arrive just before the gates open at 8 am; tour buses arrive around 9 am.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat and bring plenty of water and sunscreen as it can get brutally hot and humid. A compact poncho is also advisable, as sudden thunderstorms are common.

There are several large cats roaming within the park's borders including jaguars and ocelot, but chances of spotting them are extremely slim. Rather, keep your eyes open for impressive leaf-cutters on the forest floor. There's a good chance of spotting a few different species of monkeys, like howler monkeys, in the early morning or late afternoon.
