Restaurant Mi Fundo

Showcasing southern Chilean hospitality at its finest, this restaurant was actually constructed using wood from trees taken from the bottom of Lake Calafquén. The gregarious owners are on-site serving up stories and exquisite food, from diverse dishes using local trout and salmon to roast beef covered with a delicious mushroom sauce.

Restaurant Última Esperanza

$$$

Named for the strait on which Puerto Natales is located, Restaurant Última Esperanza is perhaps your last chance to try Patagonian seafood classics in a town being overrun by hip eateries. This traditional restaurant is well known for attentive, if formal, service, and top-quality, typical dishes. Poached conger eel in shellfish sauce, king crab stew, and cordero are specialties—dishes served with plenty of flavor and little fuss. The room is big and impersonal, and for this reason alone the restaurant may be losing ground to new arrivals more focused on atmosphere and comfort.

Restaurante Cocina Frau Holle

$$$$

Get a table with an incredible view of the lake during the day if you can, and prepare to enjoy mouthwatering homemade bread and a delicious pisco sour. Then, go for one of their huge steaks, pork chops, or short ribs, along with the homemade French fries. If possible, and that's a big if, leave room for the spectacular desserts.

Sacho Restaurant

$$

Going strong since the late 1970s, Sacho features the favorite seafood plates Chiloé is known for, cooked in the traditional style, from fish and curanto to chupe de jaiba (crab stew). Service is friendly and mostly prompt, even when it fills up at lunchtime with locals. Though there is a nice bay view, it's not the ambience you're here for; it's for the Chiloé seafood. There are chicken and beef plates for nonseafood lovers.

Salón de Té Entrelagos

$$$

This swanky café caters to Valdivian business executives who come here to make deals over sandwiches, decadent crepes, and desserts. In the evenings, the atmosphere feels less formal—the menu is exactly the same—as the Entrelagos becomes a place to meet friends who converse well into the night. Next door is the Entrelagos chocolate store, which is a good place to buy a gift or splurge.

San Antonio

$$

The food is much the same here as elsewhere in Pomaire, but San Antonio has a number of perks, particularly for families with children. There's a children's menu and, on weekends, everyone who eats here can take the free pottery course at the Granja, just across the road. Diners can also use the swimming pool for a modest fee or sprawl under the fig tree for a post-lunch nap.

San Marco

$$$$

More than six decades after Edoardo Melotti emigrated here from northern Italy, his restaurant maintains a reputation for first-class food and service. The menu includes traditional gnocchi, as well as pasta stuffed with shrimp, carne mechada (shredded beef), or pear, walnut, and ricotta. Complement your meal with a bottle from the extensive wine list. The modern dining room with abundant foliage and large windows overlooks busy Avenida San Martín. Farther inside, the two dining rooms in the house that the restaurant originally occupied are elegant and more refined.

Sandwichería Mitos

$$

The giant sandwiches here have attained mythical status in these parts. The restaurant also has an extensive daily menu featuring a variety of traditional Chilean dishes like cazuela, roasted chicken, lentejas (lentils), and more. This is a good break from the ubiquitous seafood establishments on the waterfront.

Shitake

$$

With so much fresh fish available, it's no wonder that sushi and sashimi have caught on with locals. In fact, it's hard to find a block downtown that lacks a Japanese restaurant, but a favorite is Shitake, which occupies a few gold and beige rooms on Avenida San Martín. The tempura is flavorful, especially when it incorporates juicy Ecuadorean shrimp. Sushi here is a group activity—you can order platters of anywhere from 18 to 103 pieces.

Tataku Vave

$$ | Hanga Roa

At Hanga Piko, the next bay south from Hanga Roa, this delicious, all-fish restaurant is worth the 15-minute walk. At 6,000 pesos, the set main course at lunchtime is a good value, but the large portions of ceviche to share are even more popular. The bay, where most of Easter Island's supplies are brought ashore, is not exactly pristine—it's the most industrial area on the island—but it's a prime place for spotting turtles on your way in or out of the restaurant.  The view from the restaurant is spectacular over the ocean, but can be breezy.
