Hotel de Castro

$$$ | Chacabuco 202, Castro, 570000, Chile

Looming over downtown near the estuary, this hotel has a sloped chalet-style roof with a long skylight, which makes the interior seem bright and airy even on a cloudy day. Designed by one of Chile's most important architects, Emilio Duhart, and built half a century ago, the structure underwent significant remodeling in 2008 and added a new wing, with 20 suites and a spa. If you're willing to pay about 40,000 pesos more, those suites are worth the upgrade—twice as big as a double room in the old building and with better views and modern beds and furnishings. The restaurant has huge windows with great views of the Golfo de Corcovado. The hotel also has a disco that opens on weekends.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Bay views
  • Spa

Cons

  • Older building is dated
  • Weak Wi-Fi signal on some floors
  • Limited parking space

The hotel consistently wins rave reviews for its cleanliness, service, and overall ambience.

Palafito Cucao Lodge

$$$ | Chiloé National Park, Cucao, 5770000, Chile

With 13 rooms, each with private bathroom and a view of Cucao Lake, this is an excellent option for overnight visits to Chiloé National Park. For a small hotel in a rural Chilean park, it's also surprisingly on-the-grid with Wi-Fi (albeit a shaky connection). Guests have access to the kitchen. Trekking and horseback riding excursions in the park can also be arranged.

Pros

  • Lake views
  • Good place to meet people
  • Well designed

Cons

  • Neighbor noise
  • Heating system erratic
  • Wi-Fi is slow

A solid choice for your stay, the venerable Panamericana Hotel Ancud has long been one of Chiloé's top hotels. Its views atop a bluff overlooking the historic Fuerte de San Antonio are first-rate. The rooms in the rustic main building have unique log-cabin walls. The lobby, with its huge fireplace inviting you to linger, opens into the restaurant (good food!), which feels spacious thanks to its vaulted ceilings and picture windows.
