Tierra Chiloé

$$$$ | San José Playa, Castro, Castro, 570000, Chile Fodor's Choice
Refugia Lodge, Castro
averdung-foto.de

Tranquility and absorbing views of verdant farmland and Chiloé coastline make this truly upscale home-away-from-home quite intimate, as does the reading room, fireplace lounge, and dining area in the main lodge. Native woods and traditional local crafts such as wools, basketry, and figurines round out the design. Guest rooms have inland sea views and interiors that continue the traditional-yet-luxurious style. At the restaurant, the chef's ever-changing menu makes inventive use of local ingredients. A spacious indoor-outdoor spa makes the experience here even more incredible. The hotel makes your trip as easy as possible, including guided excursions, from active (horseback rides, trekking, boating) to cultural (visits of villages, national parks, and UNESCO World Heritage sites). All-inclusive rates include meals and drinks and round-trip transport from Castro's airport.

Pros

  • Impressive architecture
  • Beautiful setting and views
  • Indoor-outdoor spa

Cons

  • Occasional salmon farming pens amid the sea views
  • Most of the excursions are group trips
  • Can be difficult to find

Faros del Sur

$$ | Costanera Norte 320, Ancud, 5710000, Chile

This rustic wooden hotel that bills itself as a "boutique hostel" is a worthy choice for the views alone. Though the rooms are simple with wooden beds and little furniture, they are clean and well lit with ample windows that also frame ocean views. There are also seven larger apartments that can hold up to six people. It's only about 10 minutes from town. Service is helpful and friendly.

  • Family atmosphere
  • Tranquil location

Cons

  • No elevator
  • Bathrooms could use a face-lift
  • Hard to get to without a car

Hotel de Castro

$$$ | Chacabuco 202, Castro, 570000, Chile

Looming over downtown near the estuary, this hotel has a sloped chalet-style roof with a long skylight, which makes the interior seem bright and airy even on a cloudy day. Designed by one of Chile's most important architects, Emilio Duhart, and built half a century ago, the structure underwent significant remodeling in 2008 and added a new wing, with 20 suites and a spa. If you're willing to pay about 40,000 pesos more, those suites are worth the upgrade—twice as big as a double room in the old building and with better views and modern beds and furnishings. The restaurant has huge windows with great views of the Golfo de Corcovado. The hotel also has a disco that opens on weekends.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Bay views
  • Spa

Cons

  • Older building is dated
  • Weak Wi-Fi signal on some floors
  • Limited parking space
