The Olympic Peninsula and Washington Coast Restaurants

Port Townsend reigns as the foodie capital of the Olympic Peninsula, where Pacific Northwest coastal cuisine prevails. For a small town, it features an impressive collection of casual yet upscale dining options, some with sweeping bay views. Influences include Mediterranean, Latin, and Southern American cooking. Many restaurants and pubs offer straight-from-the-farm organic herbs and vegetables as well as locally crafted artisanal breads and cheeses and, of course, shellfish and salmon from local waters.

The entire Olympic Culinary Loop—from Port Townsend, Sequim, Port Angeles, and Forks to the Long Beach Peninsula(www.olympicculinaryloop.com)—is best known for its seafood, fresh from local bays and inlets or wild caught in the Pacific Ocean by local fishermen. Many restaurants along the route feature fish-and-chips, chowders, oyster or salmon burgers, crab cakes, cioppino, clams, and mussels. The peninsula also offers many family-friendly and down-home eateries, from hearty burger and breakfast joints to authentic Thai, Japanese, and Mexican restaurants.

Inspired and creative yet unpretentious, this cozy, cheerful place serves gourmet comfort food at its best. Look for small plates such as fried-green tomatoes, Dungeness crab beignets, and Willapa Bay clams steamed in Hefeweizen, and dinner entrées such as ravioli stuffed with butternut squash and Gorgonzola, eight-hour pot roast, and lemon, crab, and shrimp fettuccine. Entrées come with house-baked bread, marionberry conserve, corn relish, and seasonal local vegetables. Razor clams and panfried oysters are available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Rich chocolate-rum-truffle cheesecake is a popular dessert. The excellent wine list features Pacific Northwest labels.

Carefully crafted breakfasts and lunches are the focus of this well-run, family-friendly eatery, a Sequim institution since 1981. Breakfast is served throughout the day, and on Sunday, when the large, well-lighted dining room is especially bustling, it's the only meal. The selection is extensive. Thickly sliced bacon and eggs are a top seller, but the restaurant is best known for its creamy blintzes, golden-brown waffles, crepes, and variety of pancakes, particularly the cinnamony-sweet soufflé-style apple pancake. Lunches include burgers, salads, and sandwiches.

Paris meets the Pacific Northwest in this Uptown bistro, where classic French bistro fare meets contemporary, farm-to-table flair. Chef-owner Laurette Feit—known by her nickname, Lolo—sources her ingredients, including grass-fed beef, organic eggs, and wild king salmon, from local farmers and fishermen. Exquisitely presented entrées—think lamb shanks with creamy polenta; steak au poivre; king salmon topped with black-olive-and-sun-dried-tomato butter—feature beautifully balanced flavors, colors, and textures. Profiteroles, flourless chocolate torte, and crème brûlée are signature desserts.

This bar and grill used to be the most popular saloon and brothel in town, and the restaurant has a collection of prints recalling those bawdy days. Even the establishment's name was taken from the saloon's notorious original owner, Billy Ghol. It's said his ghost haunts the premises. Standard fare includes generous burgers, soups and salads, but you can go exotic with grilled yak, and food is served until 11 pm. The interior design as well as the food is far more Euro-savvy than is typical on the Olympic Peninsula. A fanciful dining room is done up in bold red hues, with crisp white linens, huge oil paintings, and glittering chandeliers; the spacious solarium takes an equally formal approach. A changing menu highlights house-made French onion soup, escargots, magret de canard with berry sauce, Dungeness crab soufflé, filet mignon, and rack of lamb. The wine list is superb, with French, Australian, and Northwest choices to pair with everything.

The entrance to this subterranean space can be difficult to spot—at the bottom of a Tyler Street staircase. There you'll find a sophisticated yet casual wine and cocktail bar that melds vintage Victorian with a rustic-industrial feel and sense of whimsy (concrete floors, reclaimed wood, antiques).
