Tall Trees Trail

Although this roughly 30-acre grove ranks among the parks' most beautiful old-growth stands, getting to it requires a steep and winding 14-mile drive, followed by a somewhat rigorous 4-mile round-trip hike involving an 800-foot descent into the Redwood Creek flood plain. To embark on this journey, you must obtain a free permit at the Kuchel center to access the unpaved road off Bald Hills Road. Rangers dispense a limited number per day, first come, first served. No trailers or RVs are allowed. Given the effort required, if you only have a little time, it's best to save this one for your second or third visit. Moderate.

Telescope Peak Trail

The 13-mile round-trip (with 3,200 feet of elevation gain) trail begins at Mahogany Flat Campground, which is accessible by a rough dirt road. Ice axes and crampons may be necessary in winter—check at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center. It takes a minimum of six grueling hours to hike to the top of the 11,049-foot peak and then return. Thornton Lakes Trail

A 5-mile climb into an alpine basin with three pretty lakes, this steep and strenuous hike takes five to six hours round-trip. Difficult.

Timber Creek Overlook Trail

Don’t miss this short hike at the end of Kolob Canyons Road (keeping in mind that the final 2½ miles of the road are closed to vehicles—but not pedestrian or bike traffic—through at least early 2024). Covered with desert wildflowers in spring and early summer, it’s barely a mile round-trip on a sandy, relatively exposed plateau above the surrounding valleys. Get a good look at the Kolob Canyons “skyline,” including Shuntavi Butte in the shadow of 8,055-foot Timber Top Mountain. The last few hundred yards are a little rockier with a 100-foot ascent, but even kids and novice hikers shouldn’t have any trouble with it. At the picnic area at the trailhead, you might spy lizards, chipmunks, squirrels, and the occasional long-eared, black-tailed jackrabbit. Easy.

Tokopah Falls Trail

This trail with a 500-foot elevation gain follows the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River for 1¾ miles one-way and dead-ends below the impressive granite cliffs and cascading waterfall of Tokopah Canyon. Tower Arch Trail

Check with park rangers before attempting the dirt road through Salt Valley to the Klondike Bluffs parking area. If rains haven't washed out the road, a trip to this seldom-visited area provides a solitude-filled hike that takes visitors up a rock wall, across a valley, and through sand dunes before culminating in a giant rock opening. Allow from two to three hours for this 2.6-mile round-trip hike, not including the drive. Moderate.

Towers Trail

If you want to see the lake and don't have all day to hike, the Towers Trail, which is open to bikes along its first 1.7 miles, provides quicker access. Named for an old tower beacon for the airport, the 3-mile route arrives at the lake in roughly the same spot as the Bartlett Lake Trail and has similar views. The trailhead is just outside of the park, about 3 miles closer to Gustavus. Moderate.

Trail of the Cedars

Less than ½ mile long, this loop trail winds its way through one of the finest surviving stands of old-growth western red cedar in Washington. Some of the trees along the path are more than 1,000 years old. Easy.

Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes

Meandering for 73 miles through northern Idaho, from Plummer (63 miles south of Coeur d'Alenes via U.S. 95), to Mullen and along the shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene, this former Union Pacific “rail to trail” is popular among hikers, in-line skaters, joggers, and cyclists. In the winter, it attracts snowshoers and Nordic skiers. The paved pathway, with regular camping and rest areas, rolls by the chain lakes region and marshy wetlands that are perfect for fishing and canoeing. After passing through the mountains of the historic Silver Valley mining area and under the shadow of the Silver Mountain ski resort, the trail levels out on the Palouse prairie.

Trail of the Shadows

This ¾-mile loop is notable for its glimpses of meadowland ecology, its colorful soda springs (don't drink the water), James Longmire's old homestead cabin, and the foundation of the old Longmire Springs Hotel, which was destroyed by fire around 1900. Easy.

Transept Trail

This 3-mile round-trip, 1½-hour trail begins near the Grand Canyon Lodge at 8,255 feet. Well maintained and well marked, it has little elevation change, sticking near the rim before reaching a dramatic view of a large stream through Bright Angel Canyon. The trail leads to Transept Canyon, which geologist Clarence Dutton named in 1882, declaring it "far grander than Yosemite." Check the posted schedule to find a ranger talk along this trail; it's also a great place to view fall foliage. Flash floods can occur any time of the year, especially June through September when thunderstorms develop rapidly. Easy.

Tree Farm Trail

The trail loops through forests and across a large open field next to a neighborhood Christmas tree farm. Considered to be an easier hike at just under 3 miles, ramblers will see an abundance of wildlife including deer, fox, coyote, and several bird species on this well-trodden trail, which begins and ends at the northeast edge of Horseshoe Pond trailhead. Visitors are asked to be respectful of private property lines when walking along the trail, which also provides access to a fishing pier at Horseshoe Pond. Near the pond, you’ll find a restroom and a picnic pavilion with tables and grills. Easy.

Trillium Gap Trail

Grotto Falls is the only waterfall in the park that you can walk behind. The Trillium Gap Trail, off the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, takes you there through a hemlock forest. Only 1.3 miles long with an easy slope, this trail is suitable for novice hikers and is one of the most popular in the park. The total round-trip distance to Grotto Falls is 2.6 miles. Trillium Gap Trail continues on to LeConte Lodge. It is a horse trail, and llamas resupplying the lodge also use it. Easy.

Triple Lakes Trail

At 9.5 miles one-way, the Triple Lakes Trail is the longest trail in the park. It starts at the Denali Visitor Center and runs south, crossing a pair of creeks and offering vistas at a trio of lakes. The trail is a mixture of gravel, roots, dirt, and rocks that features a relatively steep 20% grade in some sections. Plan on it taking about five hours one way before you reach the other trailhead on Highway 3, about 7 miles south of the park entrance. Difficult.

Trout Lake Trail

It takes just an hour or two to enjoy this slightly elevated but generally tame 1.2-mile round-trip hike in Lamar Valley that leads through meadows and stands of Douglas fir trees and then circumnavigates pretty Trout Lake, a favorite spot for fishing. Easy.

Turner River Paddling Trail

Spanning Big Cypress National Preserve to the north and Everglades National Park to the south, this moderately difficult paddling trail winds through almost 10 miles of Turner River marked by cypress, sawgrass prairie, and mangrove trees. Save at least five to seven hours for a full trip. If you're in Big Cypress, you can access the trail on U.S. 41 west of Turner River Road. If you're accessing from Everglades City, enter at the NPS Gulf District Ranger Station or Chokoloskee Island. Moderate There are four additional paddling trails within Big Cypress.

Turnhole Bend Nature Trail

A short uphill grade takes you to a forested path that weaves among impressive sinkole features. Don't be fooled by the serenity—something significant is going on underneath your feet. The cause becomes clear when you arrive at the Turnhole Bend Overlook, a platform that provides a view of the site below, where a large underground waterway wells up as a bluehole spring to join the Green River at Turnhole Bend. The result is the "turnhole," a body of water large enough that steamboats once used it to turn around in the 19th century. This trail should not be confused with the Turnhole Bend Trail, a backcountry trail that approaches the area from the north side of the river. 0.5 mile. Moderate.

Turnhole Bend Trail

Hikers pass open forests and sun-spattered canopies on your way southward to Turnhole Bend, a wide bend in Green River. The end of the Turnhole Bend Trail provides a singular view of the Green River Valley at a high point in the center of a large bend in the river, where the river surrounds you on three sides. Directly south across the river is the location of Turnhole Spring, an outlet of an underground waterway. This trail intersects Sal Hollow Trail at 0.6 miles. Turnhole Bend Campsite lies at the trail terminus. The trail does not continue down to the river. 1.8 mi. Moderate. Twentymile Loop Trail

The national park's Twentymile entrance on the northern side of Cheoah Lake is its most difficult to reach, and thus the least crowded. This is an incredible area of the park, especially during spring when the flowers and wild azaleas bloom. An easily manageable 7.2-mile loop follows old logging roads along Twentymile Creek and Moore Springs Branch, connecting via the Twentymile Loop Trail. The elevation gain is minimal, but the solitude and serenity found along the creeks (there are multiple swimming holes) is a local secret. Moderate.
