Hop off I–10 at Exit 203 to head to this shopping and dining district filled with more than 50 locally owned specialty shops, salons, cafés, and restaurants. Hearth & Soul (home goods and clothing), Narcissus (boutique), and Coton Colors (local giftware) are popular, as are many other stores in smaller area enclaves. Marlinespike Chandlery

Inspired by chandleries, a sort of general store often found in seaside towns, the shop was born out of the owner's hobby of fancy marlinespike (marine) ropework. The shop is filled with a variety of marine artifacts, antiques, and other interesting items like beach stone and sea-glass necklaces, rope and fiber boat fenders, and ditty bags (a canvas bag with marlinespike handles).

You can get a free cup of joe in a signature to-go cup when you buy a pound of coffee. Among the fine jewelry at this boutique is a wide selection of high-end pearl jewelry, including Tahitian black pearls, South Sea white and golden pearls, and chocolate Tahitian pearls. It also sells freshwater pearls in the shell, black coral (the Hawaii state gemstone), and diamonds. Creations in 14-karat gold showcasing Hawaii themes such as traditional heirloom designs and flora and fauna are also on display. Prices are high but so is the quality.

For a look into the harvesting and design of coral and black pearl jewelry, visit this shop and take a free tour at its adjacent factory near the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Note that it's closed on weekends. Avoid the "Pick a Pearl" option at their other kiosk locations unless you're prepared to be upsold on a jewelry setting or two for the pearls "found" in your shells.

Maui Divers Jewelry

Just five minutes from the airport and across from Kahului Harbor, the Maui Mall is anchored by Longs Drugs and Whole Foods and is a haven for locals and travelers alike. Amid its casual fast-food and national-chain restaurants are local spots, including the popular Tasaka Guri Guri Shop, which has been around for over 100 years and which sells a Japanese-style sherbet confection called guri guri. The mall also has a whimsically designed 12-screen megaplex.
