Recommended Fodor's Video

Halfway Whimsical

This artists' co-op is chock-full of landscape photography, textile art, and handcrafted jewelry. Some of the gallery's more "whimsical" items are clever remixes of household materials—think lamps made of toasters and jewelry made from cutlery.

Halloween

Center City East

If the sheer quantity of baubles crammed into this tiny shop doesn't take your breath away, the gorgeous, one-of-a-kind designs will. The shelves, drawers, displays, and even the second-floor balcony overflow with rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pins, and much more. The jewelry ranges from classic pearls to mystical amber. Owner Henri David (who designs some pieces) is well known for his lavish and outrageous Halloween fetes. He can do custom work, such as creating mates for single earrings. Proudly old-fashioned, the shop does not have a website, and does not accept credit cards.

Harlem Shambles

Harlem
With whole sides of beef and hogs hanging from the ceiling, and butchers wearing fedoras with neckties tucked behind their aprons, this artisan meatery feels old school. It was founded by the Forrester brothers, who have a philosophy of breaking down whole animals to produce everything from fresh custom cuts and chops to sausages and chili—all while reducing waste. Most of the offerings, which include a selection of cheeses and charcuterie, are sourced locally from small farms.
