Onggi

Washington Ave

Fermentation is the name of the entire game at the quirky Onggi (pronounced “Ong-gee”), named after the Korean vessels in which fermentations like soy sauce, kimchi, and rice wine are made. Owned by a young trio of self-titled “fermentation nerds,” the friendly shop peddles an array of fantastic—and mostly small-batch—products: the likes of Taiwanese soy pastes; preserved Moroccan Meyer lemon paste; ponzu sauces with yuzu; and mushroom ale vinegars.

Oro Bianco Italian Creamery

This bright and airy shop is a perfect place to stop and grab a buffalo mozzarella sandwich for lunch, or a scoop of homemade gelato, also made from the milk of a herd of water buffalo that graze over two ranches in the Hill Country. There is outdoor seating on a spacious back patio and a small Italian grocery selling cured meats, cheeses, and other specialty food items, as well as books, kitchen tools, and coffee. Bring the family, because you can often find a few water buffalo grazing out back. Oro Bianco Italian Creamery now has outposts in Blanco, Dripping Springs, and Fredericksburg.

Piccolina

Originally a popup, this tiny stone storefront with outdoor seating is where owner Christina Harman, inspired by her love of the Amalfi Coast, whips up her small-batch Italian ices and gelato made with locally sourced ingredients. Piccolina is a happy place, filled with fresh flowers and delicious flavors that just make people feel good. Try the fresh-squeezed lemonade, or ices made with Prosecco and dubbed The Proseccolina.

The Pickle Guys

Lower East Side

In the late 1800s, pickle sellers were a dime a dozen—or to be more exact, a penny a cucumber, which went up to around a nickel by the early 1900s: it was cheap snack, and there were pickle vendors selling their wares from pushcarts and giant barrels all over the Lower East Side. It's said that at one point there were 200 pickle sellers on Essex Street alone, but these days there's only one left: The Pickle Guys.

Pop Up Grocer

Greenwich Village

After doing a series of pop-ups, as the name suggests, this unique, colorful food market has decided not to pop-down. Thank goodness for that. After all, this is no ordinary market. The concept here is to stock the shelves with unique treats and snacks—things you might not find at your grocery store back home, but instead, might see at a small corner market while traveling somewhere in the world. You may not recognize any of the names, but you're certain to be dazzled by a new brand of coffee, candy, chips, or soda.

Raffetto's

Greenwich Village

You might not have realized it but you may have already eaten the pasta made in this diminutive food shop: Raffetto's quietly supplies dozens of Italian restaurants in the city with pasta and related food items. Since 1906, the Raffetto family has been making dried and fresh pasta and stocking their shelves with homemade Italian food products—back when this part of the Village was a "Little Italy" of sorts.

Skordo

Old Port and Waterfront

Whether you’re looking to use it yourself or give it as a gift to your favorite home cook, the kitchen goods from this family-owned, Maine-based company are unusually delicious and useful. Spices are the focal point, and they’re inspired by far-flung destinations but made in nearby Brunswick. But the growing cookbook selection is commendable, too; it spotlights Maine authors and ingredients. And then there’s the nifty hodgepodge of kitchen wares—handmade ceramic oyster platters from local artisans, sleekly designed pepper mills, and spoon rests made of black marble and acacia wood.
