Di Bruno Bros.

Bella Vista

The first location of the famed specialty cheese shop, this Di Bruno’s looks laughably tiny compared with the enormous branches in Center City and the suburbs. Slight in size though it may be—it’s long, narrow, and cavelike, with salamis hanging from the ceiling like stalactites—it's absolutely jam-packed with all the specialties you expect from la famiglia. Peruse all the cheeses, oils, antipasti, and charcuterie you want, comforted by the assurance that the gregarious employees behind the counter will always break you off samples.

Dry Creek General Store

For breakfasts, sandwiches, bread, cheeses, and picnic supplies, stop by the general store, established in 1881 and a popular spot to hang out on the porch or in the bar (which stays open into the evening). Beer, wine, and artisanal sodas, ciders, and juices are for sale.

The Epicurean Trader

Cow Hollow

Located around the city, this small group of markets presents a terrific selection of gourmet foods and high-quality artisanal food and drink products. Paninis, baguettes, and espresso drinks are also available for hungry Union Street shoppers. However, it's best known for the extensive selections of craft spirits and cocktail ingredients, making this the shopping headquarters for San Francisco's home bartenders.

This welcoming grocery sells fresh produce and pork from the owner's Grasshopper Hill Farm in Rangeley as well as meat, seafood, and produce from other Maine farms and suppliers. You can get pickles from a jar, olive oil from a barrel, and cheese from a huge wheel that greets shoppers. There's also fresh-baked pies, breads, and baked goods—cinnamon rolls on Sundays! Look for pumpkins out front come fall; in summer, get an ice cream cone from the seasonal stand by the picnic area.

Giovanni Italian Specialties

North Beach

Open for only a few years, this Italian specialty grocer---a throwback in the very best way---feels like it's been a neighborhood staple forever. The third enterprise by Tony Gemignani, along with Tony's Pizza Napoletana and Capo's, in what's quickly becoming a San Francisco pizza empire is named after the pizzaiolo's son. The shop sells Italian kitchen staples like excellent canned plum tomatoes and olive oil, as well as fresh pasta and ravioli---more than 100 pounds per day are made here for Gemignani's restaurants. Home cooks can also find all the equipment their hearts desire to make pizza and pasta. And of course, grab a slice to go.

Girl Meets Dirt

According to Girl Meets Dirt founder Audra Lawlor, fruit is affected by terroir, just like wine, and the salty San Juan Islands breezes certainly seem to work magic on locally grown stone fruit and pomes. Lawlor's small-batch jams made in a collection of heavy copper pots are the perfect addition to a charcuterie board, with complex flavors like Rhubarb Lavender, Island Plum, and Orange Peppered Pear. The shop also carries housemade shrubs and bitters.

There's also a great selection of wines and domestic craft and imported beers, and the helpful staff can suggest picnic items or what to cook for dinner at your lodgings like the “heat and eat” meals and to-go salads—don't forget the whoopie pies for dessert. You can also order take-out sandwiches, soups, and salads, and even in winter, the store's outdoor Smokin’ Good BBQ ( www.smokingoodbarbecue.com) serves slow-smoked poultry, pork, and beef offerings from an orange trailer.

The colorful self-serve site is open 24 hours, but what makes it truly special is that the entire stand operates on the honor system. Hadley Fruit Orchards

Just off I–10 near the Desert Hills outlet mall, stock up on dried fruit, nuts, candy, and other road-trip treats at what was once a roadside stand owned by the folks who invented trail mix. Although the café serves sandwiches and other quick bites, a must-order is the date shake made with caramel-tasting, California-grown, Deglet Noor dates. (A vegan version is available, too.)

Harney & Sons

Honolua Store

In contrast to Kapalua's many high-end retailers, the old Honolua Store still plies the groceries and household goods it did in plantation times. Hefty plates of ono (delicious) local foods are served at the deli until 3 pm and best enjoyed on the wraparound porch. The plate lunches are the quintessential local meal. The coffee bar is welcoming and includes air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi daily until 6 pm.
