Daytrip Society

Fodor's Choice

The hip and well-selected array of goods at this modern-design shop makes it an excellent place for both window-shopping and finding gifts for just about anyone on your list (including yourself). A refreshing departure from the rest of the traditional gift shops in the village, this boutique is chock-full of eye candy, most of which is also functional. There are many locally sourced and contemporary products, from hats and jewelry to novelty books, home decor, and outdoor adventure essentials. Check out Daytrip Jr., its equally hip children's store around the corner.

Dervish and Banges

Islands of Adventure Fodor's Choice

The main repository of Potterabilia sells everything from Hogwarts school uniforms to broomsticks and other Quidditch supplies (including the legendary Nimbus Two-Thousand-and-One). This is also a good place to buy a new pair of Spectrespecs or stock up on other magic equipment.

Desert Hills Premium Outlets

Fodor's Choice

About 20 miles west of Palm Springs lies one of California's largest outlet malls, which hawks everything from bikinis and bags to sunglasses and stilettos. The complex's 180 stores include Jimmy Choo, Samsonite, Levi's, Saint Laurent, J. Crew, Armani, Gucci, lululemon, and Prada.

Doodlet's

The Plaza Fodor's Choice

Most locals have fond memories of visiting Doodlet's in childhood because this store has been delighting customers with its whimsical collection of pop-up books, silly postcards, tin art, hooked rugs, and stringed lights for decades. Considered one of Santa Fe's best gift shops, you will find wonderment in every display case, drawing the eye to the unusual. There's something for just about everyone at this delightfully quirky, popular shop, and often it's affordable.

Downtown Asheville

Downtown Fodor's Choice

Shopping is excellent and local all over downtown Asheville, with around 200 boutiques, including more than 30 art and crafts galleries. Several streets, notably Biltmore Avenue, Broadway Street, Lexington Avenue, Haywood Street, and Wall Street, are lined with small, independently owned stores. In fact, there are only two chain retailers in all of downtown.

Downtown Holiday Market

Petworth Fodor's Choice

This yearly holiday outdoor market is located in Penn Quarter, transforming two city blocks on F Street into a one-stop shop, open-air winter wonderland. The market features local businesses and entrepreneurs across the region, finding unique, festive treasures in the heart of the District starting mid-November and usually going through a few days before Christmas. The outdoor shopping village’s expansive footprint allows for wide aisles for shopping, browsing, and also indulging in food stalls by local restaurants.

Eataly

South Strip Fodor's Choice

Take some time to "eat, shop, and learn" (their tagline) at this vast Italian marketplace, an Italian grocery and food hall that occupies the main entrance to Park MGM. What are you eating, shopping, and learning about? Classes such as "hands-on tiramisu" enable guests to pay for a learning experience with some of Eataly's great Italian chefs. Perhaps the highlight of Eataly is a gift shop and market that sells a variety of goods imported straight from the motherland. But visitors may be more interested in the Cucina del Mercato, numerous food stalls that serve everything from wine and cheese to meats, pizza, pasta, gelato, and Italian pastries. Other highlights, mi amore? Dine at Toscano Ristorante & Bar or La Pizza & La Pasta, eyeball a replica of the famous bull mosaic in Milan (said to bestow good luck); drink wine poured "on tap"; sample the goodies at the Nutella counter (serving crepes, cookies, and croissants); and even purchase souvenir poker chips (sporting symbols of espresso, gelato, pizza, and Parmigiano Reggiano).

Emery Farm

Fodor's Choice

In the same family since 1655, Emery Farm sells berries and produce in summer, pumpkins in fall, and Christmas trees in winter. The farm shop carries breads, pies, and local crafts, and a café serves sandwiches, ice cream, cider doughnuts, and other light fare. Enjoy pumpkin-patch hayrides in autumn and visit the petting barn May–October.

Farley's Bookshop

Fodor's Choice

The shelves of employee-owned Farley's, a New Hope institution since 1967 and nicely renovated in 2023, hold ample choices, including books about the region. Staff picks, signed copies of local writers' works, children's books (in a special area), small press favorites, and cards and book-related merch: it's all here for the browsing, with staff happy to offer suggestions.

The Farm Shop at Los Poblanos

Los Ranchos de Albuquerque Fodor's Choice

A destination on its own, the wonderful Farm Shop at the renowned Los Poblanos Inn carries a distinctive selection of books, culinary gadgets, fine crafts from local makers (jewelry, textiles, ceramics), the same soothing and perfectly scented lavender lotions and soaps found in the inn's guestrooms, and a considerable variety of artisan jams, vinegars, and sauces. For takeaway sustenance, the inn's Campo kitchen whips up crisply crusted breads, sandwiches, coffee, tea, and cakes.

Farmers Market Ogden

Fodor's Choice

Find an eye-opening selection of fresh local produce, gourmet goods, live music, and local art at one of Utah's largest and most popular farmers' markets. The main summer market runs late June through mid-September from 9 am to 2 pm along Historic 25th Street. There's also a shorter fall market from late September through late October, and a winter version of the market from mid-January to late February.

Fashion Island

Fodor's Choice

The outdoor Fashion Island mall is designed with archways, courtyards, koi pond, fountains, and a mix of high-end shopping and chain stores. Multiple dining venues include Fleming's Steak House, True Food Kitchen, and Sushi Roku. Well-known department store anchors include Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's; smaller shops include See's Candies and boutiques like Brandy Melville. The newest addition is the four floor RH Newport Beach design gallery filled with sparkling chandeliers, indoor and outdoor furniture, heritage olive trees, and trickling fountains. At the rooftop is RH Ocean Grill offering sweeping views of the California coastline. Enjoy a glass of wine or Champagne from the wine bar while enjoying brunch, lunch, or dinner.

Ferdinand's

Fodor's Choice

On weekdays or any Saturday when there's a football home game, you can pop into Ferdinand's, an ice-cream and cheese shop in Washington State University's food-science building, to buy aged Cougar Gold, a cheddar-type cheese in a can. Ice cream is made daily from milk from the university's dairy cows and served in cones, dishes, shakes, malts, floats, sundaes, and banana splits to enjoy on the spot. Or take home a pint, quart, 3-gallon tub, or party pack to share. Espresso drinks are also available and about half the price of a chain coffee shop.

The line often extends into Pack Square at this premium chocolatier for truffles, ice cream, cookies, brownies, various kinds of hot and cold chocolate drinks, and specialty coffees and teas. Adjoining is the grab-and-go Chocolate Boutique. The owners also have a small chocolate factory and tasting room at  821 Riverside Dr., with guided tours daily, starting at $12.

Galleria Dallas

North Dallas Fodor's Choice

The Galleria Dallas, with more than 200 retailers and anchor stores Macy's, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue, is one of Dallas's best-known malls. Specialty shops include Tiffany & Co., Versace, Lucky Brand Jeans, and Spanish clothier Zara. A soft-structure play area on the third level near Saks (strategically placed near children's specialty shops) is a great place to let little ones (42 inches and shorter) burn off some energy. The bottom level features an ice-skating rink. Just outside the enclosed mall, but still on the Galleria grounds, is the American Girl Boutique and Bistro. Girls and their moms delight in shopping and dining in the cheerfully decorated space dedicated to the American Girl line of dolls and accessories.

The Gardens Mall

Fodor's Choice

One of the most refined big shopping malls in America, the 160-store Gardens Mall in northern Palm Beach County has stores like Chanel, Tory Burch, Louis Vuitton, and David Yurman, along with Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. There are also plenty of reasonably priced national retailers like H&M and Abercrombie & Fitch, Bloomingdale's, and Macy's. This beautiful mall has prolific seating pavilions, making it a great place to spend a humid summer afternoon.

Granite Hall Store

Fodor's Choice

Don't miss this charming little store in a old mansard-roofed structure. The upstairs once served as a community dance hall, and the original piano is still on the stage. Kids will delight in the array of "penny candy" as well as fun small toys. There are also kitchen utensils, candles, gifts, pretty cards, and books. At an outdoor window on the side of the building, you can order an ice-cream cone to enjoy on a walk down to the harbor.

Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community

Fodor's Choice

It's worth driving the eight-mile loop road through the arts and crafts community, even if you don't plan to stop. But you probably will—these mountain craftspeople do more than carve chainsaw sculptures (although they do that, too). Along the way, you'll find the works of world-class painters like Jim Gray, whose gallery is housed in a century-old former church. Just behind the gallery, Ogle's Broom Shop is home to third-generation broom makers whose functional and decorative brooms and hiking sticks are treasured by craft aficionados. There are also spots to stop for a meal, a cold drink, or ice cream.

Greenlight Bookstore

Fort Greene Fodor's Choice
If you build it, they will read. Popular demand—and some vocal attendees of a 2008 community board meeting—augured the opening of this independent bookstore. It now hosts readings by popular national and international authors as well as local book club meetings. The shelves are well stocked with contemporary titles and the staff are eager to help. The children's section in the rear of the store hosts weekly storytelling events.

Grove Arcade

Downtown Fodor's Choice

Just before its opening in 1929, the Grove Arcade, which covers an entire city block, was trumpeted as "the most elegant building in America" by its builder, W. E. Grove, the man also responsible for the Grove Park Inn. He envisioned a new kind of retail, office, and residential complex. Grove died before completing the project, and a planned 14-story tower was never built. Still, the building is an architectural wonder, with gargoyles galore. Now it's a public market with about 40 locally owned shops and restaurants, along with apartments, office space, and an outdoor market. A self-guided architectural tour (download a map from the website) takes about 45 minutes.

Harbour Town

South End Fodor's Choice

Located within the Sea Pines Resort, Harbour Town is a picture-perfect little area with plenty of shops that appeal to visitors young and old. S. M. Bradford Co., Currents, and Fashion Court specialize in upscale clothing, while Knickers and Harbour Town Surf Shop carry outdoor wear. Kids and families will enjoy the Cinnamon Bear Country Store and Hilton Head Toys.

Hawaii's Finest

Fodor's Choice

Prices are fair for the contemporary aloha apparel that makes up one of Hawaii’s better-known clothing lines. This shop on the Ala Malama shopping strip fits in with the Hawaiian pride that permeates Molokai’s culture. The modern designs and bold colors adorn light cotton fabrics and accessories, and the apparel comes in a variety of sizes. This is your best option if you're looking for matching family wear.

Hi-Tech

Fodor's Choice

This locally owned shop is a favorite among stylish surfers and landlubbers alike. Stop here immediately after deplaning to stock up on surf trunks, windsurfing gear, bikinis, or sundresses. You can also rent a surfboard or sign up for windsurfing or kiteboarding lessons while you're at it. You'll find additional branches in Kihei and Paia.

Historic Market Square

Downtown Fodor's Choice

This is about as close you can get to Old Mexico without crossing the border. Market Square (El Mercado) has been a favorite of locals and visitors for generations for dining, drinking, shopping, and celebrating. The three-block space houses restaurants, shops, galleries, and working artisans crafting their wares in everything from silver to leather to woodwork. The Market Square outdoor plaza often has music and dance performances, especially during the holidays. Check the website calendar for upcoming programming. It's a fun, colorful outing, especially if you're dining at Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia or La Margarita Restaurant & Oyster Bar and are up for a lively afternoon or evening.

I Love Hana Art Boutique

Fodor's Choice

This sweet little store across from Hana Ranch Restaurant sells handmade jewelry, photography prints, and other art from a variety of local artisans. Prices range from $20 bracelets to higher-end jewelry that you won’t find anywhere else.

Jackalope

South Side Fodor's Choice

You could easily spend a couple of hours wandering through this legendary indoor--outdoor bazaar, which sprawls over 7 acres, incorporating pottery barns, a furniture store, endless aisles of knickknacks from Latin America and Asia, and a glassblowing studio. There's also an area where craftspeople, artisans, and others sell their wares—sort of a mini--flea market feel (but with retail prices).

Jaws Country Store

Fodor's Choice

You wouldn’t guess from the exterior and the name, but this North Shore store is much closer to a boutique than a country store. Full of branded merch, gifts, sunscreen, and other body products, it’s a great place to shop for souvenirs. You can also find drinks, snacks, baked goods, and a small kombucha bar, making it a nice stop before heading out on the Road to Hana. The store also has a small cafe featuring wood-fired pizzas and empanadas.

Johnson Orchards

Fodor's Choice

Since 1904, this family farm has been growing and selling cherries, peaches, apples, pears and other local fruit. The historic white clapboard shop also carries pies, muffins, cookies, and tarts.

Just Fabulous

Fodor's Choice

Find coffee-table books, greeting cards, home decor with cheeky and naughty sayings, candles, wearable souvenirs, and other eclectic items at this fun gift shop that celebrates the area's retro-modern lifestyle and desert dolce vita.

Kakawa

East Side and Canyon Road Fodor's Choice

You're unlikely to ever have tasted anything like the divine, agave-sweetened, artisanal creations that emerge from this sweet shop. Historically accurate chocolate drinks, like the Aztec Warrior Elixir, divine caramels, and gluten-free chocolate baked goods are served in this cozy, welcoming establishment that's as much an educational experience as a chance to indulge in exceptional sweets. There are three more locations: one is on Rufina Street near Meow Wolf, another sits in midtown on San Mateo Road, and the other is all the way in Salem, Massachusetts.
