2nd Street

The stretch of 2nd Street that runs through Long Beach's tony residential neighborhood of Belmont Shore is a paradise for lovers of unique boutiques, coffee shops, bakeries, and well-curated secondhand shops. When you're done hunting for that perfect souvenir, stop in at any of the strip's plethora of restaurants and bars, explore the neighboring streets of historic bungalows and mini mansions, or head a few blocks to the beach. Young families flock to Bayshore Beach at the east end of the strip for the protected, flat waters of the marina, while those seeking the classic ocean beach experience make their way south to Belmont Shore's eponymous strand of sand.

SoHo

The walls of this large denim shop, which doubles as a factory where you can watch jeans being made, are lined with an assortment of more than 600 varieties of selvage denim. For the ultimate experience, have a bespoke pair made and choose the fabric, buttons, and even the lining material. Everything is hand-cut and sewn by the in-house seamstresses. There are ready-made jeans, too (you can get the hems tailored on the spot).

57th Street Books

Hyde Park

Everyone talks about getting lost in a good book, but what about getting lost in a good bookstore? With its series of low-ceilinged rooms that progress into one another, this neighborhood icon, which turned 41 in 2024, encourages slow exploration of its holdings, which range from literary fiction to children's picture books. Around the block, sister bookshop the Seminary Co-op is more academically inclined, but no less special.

826 Valencia

The brainchild of local author Dave Eggers is primarily a center established to help kids with their writing skills via writing programs, tutoring, and storytelling events. But the storefront is also "San Francisco's only independent pirate supply store," a quirky space filled with eye patches, spyglasses, and other pirate-themed paraphernalia. Eggers's quarterly journal, McSweeney's, and other publications are available here. Proceeds benefit the writing center.

On the center's storefront is an intricate mural designed by graphic novelist Chris Ware as a meditation on the evolution of human communication.

The 8th Street Market

This former 1940s Ford dealership is filled with a multi-vendor mix of architectural, industrial, and repurposed treasures; vintage art; and collectibles. There's even an outpost of the Comfort Coffee Co. on the premises, with drinks and snacks so you can refuel for more treasure hunting. The main building, filled with unique and well-curated antiques and loaded with character, is only the beginning at the 8th Street Market; little houses in the back are packed with even more hidden gems.

AC Value Center

Known by most as "Stuaqpak" ("Big Store" in Iñupiat), this is the only major market in town. It primarily sells groceries, but it also has a hot-food court and stocks local crafts, including furs, parkas, mukluks, and ceremonial masks (sometimes the artists set up vendor tables outside). For many people, AC Value is a lifeline to the most basic food and clothing supplies that make the extreme reaches of Alaska habitable. If you have time to visit one, you should do so, if for no other reason than to see firsthand the prices of milk and bread this far north.
