Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

CityWalk

Buffett tunes fill the air at the restaurant and at the Volcano, Land Shark, and 12 Volt bars. There's a miniature Pan Am Clipper suspended from the ceiling, music videos projected onto sails, limbo and hula-hoop contests, a huge margarita blender that erupts "when the volcano blows," and live music nightly—everything that Parrotheads need to roost. Across the promenade, another full-size seaplane (emblazoned with “Jimmy Buffett, Captain”) is the setting for the Lone Palm Airport, a pleasing and surprisingly popular outdoor waterfront bar.

JJ's Rocky Mountain Tavern

The East Village is home to JJ's Rocky Mountain Tavern, the best place for a beer after a long day on the bumps. Local musicians have people dancing on the tables with John Denver and Jimmy Buffet covers during ski season.

JJ's Wine Bar

This historic-home-turned-wine-bar in the heart of Downtown Franklin is overflowing with charm, inside and out, with countless cozy hideaways within and a wraparound porch with picturesque views of Main Street. Add soft music and even softer lighting, and it’s the perfect spot to share intimate conversation and good wine. The center hallway is lined with wine-dispensing machines that offer 1-ounce, 5-ounce, and 8-ounce pours of 28 different wines. There’s also a full bar if you’d rather order a whole bottle of wine, small plates, or cocktails.

Recommended Fodor's Video

Joe Allen

Midtown West

Relax at the bar before or after a show at this \"old reliable\" tavern on boisterous Restaurant Row, celebrated in the musical version of All About Eve. You might even spot a Broadway star enjoying a classic cocktail or tipple from its robust scotch and whiskey menus. One of Joe's standout features is not the show crowd but the hilarious \"flop wall,\" adorned with posters from musicals that bombed, sometimes spectacularly. (Check out the ones for Paradox Lust, Got Tu Go Disco, and Dude, the unfortunate sequel to Hair.)

Joe's Cafe

Steins of beer and stiff cocktails accompany hearty bar food at Joe's. It has a fun, if occasionally rowdy, collegiate scene.

Joe's Place

Green Hills
Green Hills isn't a neighborhood known for its dives or holes-in-the-wall, but Joe's Place is a lively antidote to the surrounding area's polished sheen. Stop in for a cold beer or mixed drink, and stay for arcade games, karaoke, TVs, and well-prepared bar fare like pizzas and sandwiches.

Joe's Pub

East Village

Named for the Public Theater's near-mythic impresario Joseph Papp, and located inside the renovated, historic Public Theater, Joe's is the ultimate cabaret lounge for A-list and longtime-favorite downtown performers who revel in the intimate setting—and for New Yorkers keen to discover marvelous, innovative shows and artists rarely enjoyed elsewhere. The venue serves good food and solid cocktails and has nary a bad seat, be it at a table, a booth, or the bar. If you want to occupy one, though, buy tickets and/or reserve your spot beforehand.

John & Peter's

Since 1972, this friendly dive bar has featured live, original music nightly, from folk to funk. All kinds of people come to hear jazz musicians, singer-songwriters, and rockers take the stage, as well as the not-yet-famous on Monday's open-mic night. Wednesday's invitational jam with local musicians is also popular. The beer list is long, and the bar food includes tater tots, burgers and fries, and quesadillas.

Johnny Brenda's

Fishtown

Fishtown's \"cool kid\" vibes are felt all throughout Johnny Brenda's, a neighborhood original that has grown with the neighborhood's evolution without losing its first-on-the-street edge. Part bar-restaurant, part music venue, the Frankford Avenue hangout offers visitors a space for drinking local beer and eating the better-than-regular-bar-food fare—think fresh oysters and solid burgers—as well as a space for playing billiards and listening to the diverse lineup of performers booked for the upstairs stage.

Johnny's Bar

West Village

One of the last true dive bars left in the West Village, you can spot Johnny's bar by the neon sign that lights up Greenwich Avenue, simply reading \"BAR.\" Inside, the narrow space is bedecked with bumper stickers and posters and there's always some classic rock, soul, and funk on the jukebox. As befitting of any dive, well drinks are poured with a heavy hand and bartenders are always happy to chat.

Joie de Vine

Far North Side

Catering to a lesbian clientele, this wine bar has expanded its focus to include craft beer and cocktails. The space itself is cozy, but good design (and sidewalk tables in summer) keeps it from feeling claustrophobic. Sit at the long wooden bar or opposing banquette and enjoy the room's real focal point, a glass-brick wall lighted up in multiple colors.

Jones

West Hollywood

Italian food and serious cocktails are the mainstays at Jones. Whiskey is a popular choice for the classic cocktails, but the bartenders also do up martinis properly (read: strong). The Beggar's Banquet is their version of happy hour (10:30 pm to 2 am, Sunday through Thursday), with specials on drinks and pizza.

JR's Bar & Grill

Dupont Circle

A popular institution on the 17th Street strip, this narrow, window-lined space packs in a mostly male, mostly professional, gay crowd. Various nights offer show-tune sing-alongs, trivia contests, and a "Sunday Funday" daylong happy hour.

JRDN

Pacific Beach

This contemporary lounge (pronounced "Jordan") occupies the ground floor of Pacific Beach's chicest boutique hotel, TOWER23, and offers a more sophisticated vibe in what is a very party-happy neighborhood. Sleek walls of windows and an expansive patio overlook the boardwalk.

Juniper Cocktail Lounge

South Strip

Gin is the specialty of the house at Juniper, which is named after one of the berries used to flavor the spirit; in fact, it has the largest selection of gin in Las Vegas. But thirsty patrons can get just about any craft cocktail they wish at this Park MGM lounge. The menu features a curated cocktail program using house-made juices and syrups alongside an expertly selected spirits menu, and there's a special game-day cocktail menu, too.

JUNO Brewery + Cafe + Art

Beer and art still mingle successfully at this Wells Park destination, great for anyone looking for a good brew and tapas or panini. Even better, Ian LeBlanc's exuberant metal sculpture works steadfastly preside over the outdoor patio seating. Indoors, artwork and clever design details enhance a visit to this special craft brewery, where Mexican-style 505 Lager and a developing line of English-style beers (and occasional music- and dance-based events) are featured.

Juste Lounge

With a space large enough to accommodate loungers and dancers, karaoke (on Thursday), DJs spinning hip-hop and reggae, live music, and dance lessons, this swanky lounge draws an eclectic crowd. Smoke a hookah on the patio on weekends.

Kahale's Beach Club

If you're looking for a genuine dive bar, this is the place. The bartenders are friendly, and you'll find plenty of locals to talk story with. Just be sure to mind your manners: classic dive-bar fistfights have, on occasion, been known to break out here.

Kaiyo Rooftop

SoMa

Slowly but surely San Francisco is developing a reputation for great rooftop restaurant-bars high above the city. Among the best is on the 12th floor of the Hyatt Place near Oracle Park, where the setting looks like a tropical rainforest in the middle of urban sprawl, and the food and drink focuses on Nikkei cuisine (Japanese-Peruvian). Reservations are recommended, and make sure to bundle up. Its chic sibling restaurant at the base of this building has a more ambitious menu and is also well worth a dinner visit.

Kalihi Beer

Kalihi

Finding a brewery in Kalihi isn't what you'd expect from such a modest neighborhood, but this no-frills, hole-in-the-wall spot (formerly Broken Boundary Brewery) is home to a growing menu of "old school" beers (the Hi Fi is an ode to the original West Coast IPAs of the 2000s) that aficionados will appreciate. It's also a good place for a quick bite—sandwiches, burgers, tacos, and quesadillas are on the food menu—and a drink before or after a trip to the Bishop Museum or while picking up some food souvenirs at Diamond Bakery next door.

Kask

Downtown

The darkly inviting but rather tiny sister bar to adjacent Grüner restaurant specializes in handcrafted cocktails, a well-curated selection of microbrew ales, and interesting wines. The kitchen turns out tasty nibbles, with an emphasis on cheese and charcuterie boards.

Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub

Kelvin's Piano Bar

Unlike many of the bars in Cajun Country, there's no guarantee you'll be hearing Cajun or zydeco music at Kelvin's Piano Bar. But no matter the music, the crowd will be lively and of all ages, dancing from wall to wall into the late hours of the night. You'll likely have to pay a cover to enter, but the experience will be worth it.

Keoki's Paradise Bar

A younger crowd makes this a lively spot on Friday and Saturday evenings, when live music can go until 9 pm. When the dining room clears out, there's a bit of a scene in the tropical lounge. Themed happy hours include Taco Tuesday and Burger & Beer Wednesday, when vegetarians can swap local grass-fed beef for a Kauai-made taro patty. Try the Poipu Piña to sip from a pineapple.

Kermit's Tremé Mother-in-Law Lounge

Tremé

Local personality and jazz legend Kermit Ruffins reigns at this brightly painted club that once belonged to R&B singer Ernie K-Doe. The club is a jewel of the Tremé neighborhood, hosting the best of local talent in jazz and blues nightly. The kitchen serves popular New Orleans cuisine. Look forward to the frequent cameos from Kermit himself, who plays a set here with his band, the BBQ Swingers, most Thursday nights. The neighborhood's a bit dodgy, so take a cab.

Kerry Irish Pub

French Quarter

This well-worn favorite has a pool table, a jukebox stocked with the Pogues and Flogging Molly, and, of course, Guinness on draft. A small stage at the back hosts Irish musicians, singer-songwriters, and R&B or jazz musicians nightly with no cover charge. It's one of the last venues for Irish music in the Quarter.

KettleHouse Brewing Co.

A true microbrewery that has hit the big time without losing its micro-ness, the Kettlehouse Brewing Co. has two taprooms. The original Myrtle Street location is near the Hip Strip on the south side of the river, and it hasn't changed since opening in the early 2000s. Which is a good thing. Their most popular beers are Coldsmoke, a Scotch Ale, and the uberhoppy Double Haul IPA. The new taproom is down the road in Bonner, where it's part of the new Kettlehouse Brewery & Amphitheatre. Try a chocolatey Brick and Mortar Imperial Belgian Porter, Olde Bongwater Hemp Porter, or Fresh Bongwater Hemp Pale Ale. There's no bar food other than peanuts, but you're welcome to bring in fare from local eateries.

Khyber Pass Pub

Old City

Operated as a saloon since 1876, this bi-level pub was a popular punk rock club from the 1970s through the 1990s. It has since been reinvented as a restaurant serving authentic New Orleans cuisine (try the po'boys and gumbo) alongside a serious craft beer selection (22 taps). The upstairs space still plays host to a wide slate of live performances, featuring local and lesser-known bands; musical artists; and special events with plenty of room for dancing.
